A set of integers is sumfree when no two of its elements, equal or distinct, add up to an element of the set. The Schur number is the largest such that can be partitioned into sumfree sets; only are known. For the best theoretical upper bound that Eliahou and Revuelta could cite in 2021 was , where the Ramsey number is the least such that every -colouring of the edges of the complete graph has a monochromatic triangle. The Ramsey numbers satisfy for (Greenwood–Gleason 1955); for the paper knows no recursive upper bound.
Eliahou and Revuelta proposed a conjectural one. They defined a number through the Schur degree of block-sum sets, proved (Theorem 5.4) and (Proposition 5.3), and conjectured (Conjecture 5.6). This would give (Conjecture 5.7) and (Conjecture 5.8), against the range that they give. For they proved , conjectured , and left the value open.
Timeline.
ClassicalSchur formalizes both, with .All numbers are natural numbers, except in the group below.
Sumfree sets. A set is sumfree when the sum of two of its elements, equal or distinct, is never in . A set is covered by sumfree sets when it lies in the union of sumfree sets.
Schur degree. The Schur degree is the least such that sumfree sets cover . If there is no such , it is .
For example, holds for and fails for .
Block sums. Let be a finite sequence of length . Its block sums are the sums of runs of consecutive entries:
The set of these sums is . The average of is the rational number .
The number . A length has the ER property for when every sequence of positive integers with has .
For , the inequality holds when no sumfree sets cover . It fails when some sumfree sets cover .
The number is the least with the ER property for .
The pigeonhole bound. Let and . The first values are , , and .
For , is an upper bound for the Ramsey number: , with equality for .
The group . Let . A set is sumfree in when the sum in of two of its elements, equal or distinct, is never in .
The lifted sequence. Take and . Write the numbers , with and , in increasing order:
The lifted sequence is the sequence of the gaps between consecutive terms, . Lemma 4.1 below uses it to turn a cover of into a sequence in ℕ.

. At , Conjecture 5.6 predicts . So refutes the conjecture at . Here equals the upper bound of Proposition 5.3.
The two bounds of Proposition 5.3 coincide at , where the paper gives and . So is the first case in which the conjecture says more than Proposition 5.3.
. At , Conjecture 5.6 predicts . So refutes the conjecture at .
What remains open. Conjectures 5.7 and 5.8 remain open.
The paper derives Conjecture 5.7 at each from Conjecture 5.6 at the same , with Theorem 5.4. At that derivation is not available. But Conjecture 5.7 holds there by the known values: and .
Conjecture 5.8 follows from Conjecture 5.6 at (that is, ) with Theorem 5.4. Nothing here decides that case.
With , Theorem 5.4 gives only . This is weaker than .
Status. Every target is proved and formalized.
At launch, all 12 theorems of the tree, the goal included, are Proved in Lean over 4 definition bundles. Their only axioms are propext, Classical.choice and Quot.sound.
An independent verifier checked the definitions and the six headline statements against Eliahou–Revuelta and McKenna 2026. The six statements are the goal, Theorem 4.1, Proposition 5.3, Lemma 4.1, Corollary 4.2 and Theorem 1.2.
Literature. The literature search for McKenna 2026 found no result on , or Conjectures 5.6–5.8. One citing text, in Jungić 2023, was not read. This records the search; it is not a claim of priority.
Open work, not targets.
Two kinds of bound. The two sides of an exact value of are statements of different kinds.
An upper bound needs one length. It follows from for every sequence of positive integers of one length , with and average at most .
A lower bound needs every shorter length. For every with , it needs a sequence of positive integers, with average at most , whose block sums are covered by sumfree sets.
One counterexample at length is not enough. A sequence of length and average at most need not contain consecutive entries of average at most . So monotonicity in does not follow directly from the definition.
The average bound. The lower bound of Proposition 5.3 comes from the constant sequence , with . Conjecture 5.6 states that at length , no sequence of average at most has .
Without the bound on the average, this fails. The paper gives a sequence of length 14 with , found by semi-random search. Its average is 114, and the authors remark that such examples "are hard to come by".
The gap for . The gap from 49 to 61 is open. By McKenna 2026 (§5), the construction of Corollary 4.2 gives nothing above 49 at :
McKenna 2026 knows no sequence of length 49 with average at most 5 and ; such a sequence would give .
Set ℕ and sequences List ℕ. For the Schur degree is the same in ℕ and in ℤ. Theorem 4.1 is formalized for sequences in ℕ only.sdeg is sInf in ℕ∞, so it is ⊤ when no cover exists, and . Covers are Fin n → Set ℕ; the sets need not be disjoint or inside . Each lower bound on sdeg must exclude every cover.blockSums A uses B <:+: A with B ≠ []; average [] = 0 is never used, since erL requires .erL n is sInf {L | 0 < L ∧ ERProperty n L} in ℕ, defined for every (the paper: ). As sInf ∅ = 0, an upper bound on erL alone would hold if no length had the property; the Theorem 4.1 target excludes this, giving ERProperty (k+1) at length , and 0 satisfies neither the goal nor the lower bounds.TriangleRamsey k N says every colouring of the pairs of at least naturals with at most colours has a monochromatic triangle; the tree proves it for . This is the goal of the mission: the exact value of .
A set of natural numbers is sumfree if it contains no with ( allowed). For a finite sequence of positive integers, let be its set of block sums, its average, and the least such that is covered by sumfree sets. For , Eliahou and Revuelta define as the least positive integer such that every sequence of positive integers with and satisfies . Then
Eliahou and Revuelta prove (Proposition 5.3), which gives from the Schur number and the Ramsey number . They conjecture for all (Conjecture 5.6), which at states . The value shows that Conjecture 5.6 does not hold at , and that at the upper bound of Proposition 5.3 is attained.
Formalization Note is erL 4 of the Basic bundle, with the ambient set and the Schur degree in the extended naturals. The defining set is nonempty for , so erL 4 is its least element.
