This is the spectral estimate behind the pretty-good-measurement lower bounds for quantum PAC and agnostic learning, stated with the decay factor that the source's application needs.

Let m≥10m\ge 10m≥10, β∈(0,1]\beta\in(0,1]β∈(0,1] and let TTT be a natural number with 1≤T≤m/(e3β)1\le T\le m/(e^3\beta)1≤T≤m/(e3β). Define f:{0,1}m→Rf:\{0,1\}^m\to\mathbb Rf:{0,1}m→R by f(w)=(1−β∣w∣/m)Tf(w)=(1-\beta|w|/m)^Tf(w)=(1−β∣w∣/m)T, where ∣w∣|w|∣w∣ is the Hamming weight. Let k≤mk\le mk≤m and let M∈F2m×kM\in\mathbb F_2^{m\times k}M∈F2m×k have rank kkk. Let AAA be the 2k×2k2^k\times 2^k2k×2k real matrix A(z,y)=f(M(z⊕y))A(z,y)=f(M(z\oplus y))A(z,y)=f(M(z⊕y)), where z⊕yz\oplus yz⊕y is addition in F2k\mathbb F_2^kF2k and M(z⊕y)M(z\oplus y)M(z⊕y) is the matrix-vector product over F2\mathbb F_2F2. The matrix AAA is positive semidefinite; write A\sqrt AA for its positive semidefinite square root.

There is an absolute constant K>0K>0K>0 such that for all such m,k,β,T,Mm,k,\beta,T,Mm,k,β,T,M and every z∈{0,1}kz\in\{0,1\}^kz∈{0,1}k,

A(z,z) ≤ 2−k/2 eK(Tβ2/m+Tmβ).\sqrt{A}(z,z)\ \le\ 2^{-k/2}\, e^{K\left(T\beta^2/m+\sqrt{Tm\beta}\right)} .A(z,z) ≤ 2−k/2eK(Tβ2/m+Tmβ).

Because the pretty-good-measurement success probability of the ensemble with Gram matrix G=A/2kG=A/2^kG=A/2k is ∑zG(z,z)2=A(z,z)2\sum_z\sqrt G(z,z)^2=\sqrt A(z,z)^2∑zG(z,z)2=A(z,z)2, this bound gives the exponentially small success probability used in the proofs of Theorems 4.12 and 4.15.

Formalization Note The source prints the bound without the factor 2−k/22^{-k/2}2−k/2. In that form it always holds trivially, since A(z,z)≤1\sqrt A(z,z)\le 1A(z,z)≤1. The factor is the decay that holds for every k≤mk\le mk≤m, and it cannot be improved (at T=1T=1T=1 and β→0\beta\to 0β→0, A(z,z)→2−k/2\sqrt A(z,z)\to 2^{-k/2}A(z,z)→2−k/2). A(z,z)\sqrt A(z,z)A(z,z) is the (z,z)(z,z)(z,z) entry of the square-root matrix, not the square root of the entry.

/-- Corrected statement. survey p.13, Theorem 4.13 ([AW17, Theorem 17]). Printed: for `m ≥ 10`,
`f(w) = (1 − β|w|/m)^T` with `β ∈ (0, 1]`, `T ∈ [1, m/(e³β)]`, `k ≤ m`, `M ∈ F₂^{m×k}` of rank `k`
and `A(z, y) = (f ∘ M)(z ⊕ y)`, one has `√A(z, z) ≤ e^{O(Tβ²/m + √(Tmβ))}` for all `z`.

Changed: the bound carries the factor `2^{−k/2}`, i.e.
`√A(z, z) ≤ 2^{−k/2} · e^{K(Tβ²/m + √(Tmβ))}` with an absolute `K > 0`.

Why: as printed the bound is contentless. For integer `T`, `f ∘ M` has nonnegative Fourier
coefficients, so `A` is positive semidefinite with `A(z, z) = f(0) = 1`, and `√A(z, z) ≤ 1` always.
The source's own use (p.14, p.15: `P_pgm = Σ_z √G(z,z)² ≤ e^{O(Tε²/d + √(Tdε)) − d − Tε}`, with
`G = A/2^k`, so `P_pgm = √A(z,z)²`) needs a decaying factor that the printed statement drops
(trap 30). The decay that holds for every `k ≤ m` is `2^{−k/2}`. It cannot be `k`-independent
(at `k = 0`, `√A = 1`), and its rate is tight (at `T = 1`, `β → 0`, `√A(z,z) → 2^{−k/2}`). With
the proof's `k ≥ d/4` it gives the source's `e^{−Ω(d)}`.

`T` is a natural number (the number of copies in both applications), so `√A` is the positive
semidefinite square root (`psdSqrt`); `√A(z, z)` is the `(z, z)` entry of that root. -/

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

The statement asserts that there is a single real constant K>0K > 0K>0 such that the following holds for all natural numbers m,k,Tm, k, Tm,k,T, every real β\betaβ, every matrix M∈F2m×kM \in \mathbb{F}_2^{m \times k}M∈F2m×k, and every vector z∈F2kz \in \mathbb{F}_2^kz∈F2k.

Hypotheses. Assume:

  • m≥10m \ge 10m≥10 and k≤mk \le mk≤m;
  • 0<β≤10 < \beta \le 10<β≤1;
  • T≥1T \ge 1T≥1 and T≤me3βT \le \dfrac{m}{e^{3}\beta}T≤e3βm, a real inequality;
  • rank⁡(M)=k\operatorname{rank}(M) = krank(M)=k, computed over F2\mathbb{F}_2F2, so MMM has full column rank.

The case k=0k = 0k=0 is not excluded. Here MMM is the empty m×0m \times 0m×0 matrix and the index set F20\mathbb{F}_2^0F20 is a single point.

The matrix. Define the real 2k×2k2^k \times 2^k2k×2k matrix GGG, indexed by x,y∈F2kx, y \in \mathbb{F}_2^kx,y∈F2k, by

Gx,y=(1−β ∣M(x+y)∣m)T.G_{x,y} = \left(1 - \frac{\beta\, |M(x+y)|}{m}\right)^{T}.Gx,y=(1−mβ∣M(x+y)∣)T.

Here x+yx + yx+y is coordinatewise addition mod 2, M(x+y)∈F2mM(x+y) \in \mathbb{F}_2^mM(x+y)∈F2m is the matrix–vector product over F2\mathbb{F}_2F2, and ∣⋅∣|\cdot|∣⋅∣ is Hamming weight, the number of nonzero coordinates. In other words, GGG is the XOR-convolution matrix of the function

w↦(1−β∣Mw∣m)T.w \mapsto \left(1 - \frac{\beta |Mw|}{m}\right)^T .w↦(1−mβ∣Mw∣)T.

The square root. Let G\sqrt{G}G be the matrix obtained by applying the real function t↦tt \mapsto \sqrt{t}t↦t to GGG via the continuous functional calculus. Concretely, GGG is symmetric because x+y=y+xx + y = y + xx+y=y+x. Diagonalize it orthogonally and replace each eigenvalue λ\lambdaλ by λ\sqrt{\lambda}λ. The real square root used here sends negative numbers to 000, so any negative eigenvalue would be replaced by 000.

Conclusion. The diagonal entry of G\sqrt{G}G at index zzz satisfies

(G)z,z  ≤  (12)kexp⁡ ⁣(K(Tβ2m+T m β)).\big(\sqrt{G}\big)_{z,z} \;\le\; \left(\frac{1}{\sqrt 2}\right)^{k} \exp\!\left( K \left( \frac{T \beta^2}{m} + \sqrt{T\, m\, \beta} \right) \right).(G)z,z≤(21)kexp(K(mTβ2+Tmβ)).

The constant KKK is chosen once, before all of m,k,β,T,M,zm, k, \beta, T, M, zm,k,β,T,M,z, so it does not depend on any of them.
