Let the valuations be additive and let XXX be a partial allocation with pool PPP, k=∣P∣k=|P|k=∣P∣, such that

  1. XXX is EFX;
  2. vj(Xj)≥vj(P)v_j(X_j)\ge v_j(P)vj(Xj)≥vj(P) for every agent jjj;
  3. ∣P∣|P|∣P∣ is less than the number of sources of the envy graph GXG_XGX.

Fix an agent iii. Let N′N'N′ be the set consisting of all sources of GXG_XGX, agent iii and all agents jjj with ∣Xj∣≥2|X_j|\ge 2∣Xj∣≥2; let n′=∣N′∣n'=|N'|n′=∣N′∣ and let M′=⋃j∈N′XjM'=\bigcup_{j\in N'}X_jM′=⋃j∈N′Xj be the goods allocated to the agents in N′N'N′. Then

(2(n′−(k+1))+k+2) vi(Xi) = (2n′−k) vi(Xi) ≥ vi(M′∪P).\bigl(2(n'-(k+1))+k+2\bigr)\, v_i(X_i)\ =\ (2n'-k)\, v_i(X_i)\ \ge\ v_i(M'\cup P).(2(n′−(k+1))+k+2)vi(Xi) = (2n′−k)vi(Xi) ≥ vi(M′∪P).

This is the counting step of the proof of Theorem 14: it sums vi(Xi)≥vi(P)v_i(X_i)\ge v_i(P)vi(Xi)≥vi(P) (1), vi(Xi)≥vi(Xj)v_i(X_i)\ge v_i(X_j)vi(Xi)≥vi(Xj) for the sources jjj (2) and 2vi(Xi)≥vi(Xj)2v_i(X_i)\ge v_i(X_j)2vi(Xi)≥vi(Xj) for the other j∈N′j\in N'j∈N′ (3), using that there are at least k+1k+1k+1 sources.

Formalization Note The set N′N'N′ is given by an equation fixing it to the set the page constructs. The coefficient is written in its simplified form 2n′−k2n'-k2n′−k as a real number (cardinalities cast to R\mathbb{R}R); it equals the printed 2(n′−(k+1))+k+22(n'-(k+1))+k+22(n′−(k+1))+k+2.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
