Let EEE be a complex inner product space and let A,BA,BA,B be bounded linear operators on EEE that are positive, i.e. self-adjoint with ⟨x,Ax⟩≥0\langle x,Ax\rangle\ge0⟨x,Ax⟩≥0 and ⟨x,Bx⟩≥0\langle x,Bx\rangle\ge0⟨x,Bx⟩≥0 for all xxx. If

Re⁡⟨x,Ax⟩=Re⁡⟨x,Bx⟩for all x∈E,\operatorname{Re}\langle x,Ax\rangle=\operatorname{Re}\langle x,Bx\rangle\qquad\text{for all }x\in E,Re⟨x,Ax⟩=Re⟨x,Bx⟩for all x∈E,

then A=BA=BA=B.

This lets one identify a positive operator from its quadratic form alone, which is how operators defined by (possibly infinite) weighted sums of squares are matched with explicitly constructed positive operators.

Formalization Note Positivity is Mathlib's ContinuousLinearMap.IsPositive; completeness of EEE is not assumed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
