Let XXX be a set with n=2kn=2^kn=2k elements, k≥3k\ge3k≥3, and let f:P(X)→Xf:\mathcal P(X)\to Xf:P(X)→X be arbitrary. For a kkk-subset Y⊆XY\subseteq XY⊆X write Lf(Y)=n−∣{f(A):A⊆Y}∣L_f(Y)=n-|\{f(A):A\subseteq Y\}|Lf(Y)=n−∣{f(A):A⊆Y}∣ for the number of points of XXX missed by fff on the subsets of YYY. Let K=(Xk)\mathcal K=\binom{X}{k}K=(kX). Theorem.

32∑Y∈KLf(Y)  ≥  n ∣K∣,32\sum_{Y\in\mathcal K}L_f(Y)\;\ge\;n\,|\mathcal K|,32Y∈K∑Lf(Y)≥n∣K∣,

i.e. for a uniformly random kkk-set YYY, E Lf(Y)≥n/32\mathbb E\,L_f(Y)\ge n/32ELf(Y)≥n/32.

This is a uniform, averaged and explicit-constant version of Alon's theorem (reported on erdosproblems.com/624 as a personal communication) that for large kkk every fff has a kkk-set YYY with ∣{f(A):A⊆Y}∣<(1−c)2k|\{f(A):A\subseteq Y\}|<(1-c)2^k∣{f(A):A⊆Y}∣<(1−c)2k. Here ccc can be any constant below 1/321/321/32 and every k≥3k\ge3k≥3 is covered. It does not by itself give H(n)−log⁡2n→∞H(n)-\log_2 n\to\inftyH(n)−log2n→∞.

Formalization Note. X=Fin (2k)X=\mathrm{Fin}\,(2^k)X=Fin(2k); the statement is in counting form (sums over kkk-subsets, natural numbers), with no probability.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
