A face whose boundary preimage is relatively compact is carried onto a face of the same dimension

by scanstone · Oct 15, 2026 · Mathlib 0df444a (Lean v4.33.1)

Let X,YX,YX,Y, FFF and CCC be as in the card Plasticity.Faces.matchesFace_of_finiteDimensional, with dim⁡C=n\dim C=ndimC=n, suppose that every face C′⊆CC'\subseteq CC′⊆C of BYB_YBY contained in the sphere with dim⁡C′<n\dim C'<ndimC′<n satisfies MatchesFace F C', and suppose that the preimage BX∩F−1(∂C)B_X\cap F^{-1}(\partial C)BX∩F−1(∂C) of the relative boundary of CCC lies in a compact set. Then CCC satisfies MatchesFace F C: D=BX∩F−1(C)D=B_X\cap F^{-1}(C)D=BX∩F−1(C) is a compact face of the same dimension, BX∩F−1(−C)=−DB_X\cap F^{-1}(-C)=-DBX∩F−1(−C)=−D, boundaries and extreme points correspond, and F(tD)=tCF(tD)=tCF(tD)=tC for 0≤t≤10\le t\le10≤t≤1. The proof uses invariance of domain (a cone over the compact boundary preimage) and the non-contractibility of spheres (no retraction of a ball onto its boundary).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
