Let III be an instance and 0<g≤10 < g \le 10<g≤1. Call a piece large if its size exceeds g/2g/2g/2 and small otherwise. Let P0P_0P0 be any packing of the large pieces, with AAA bins, and let PPP be the result of inserting the small pieces into P0P_0P0 one at a time, starting a new bin only when necessary. Then

∣P∣≤max⁡(A, (1+g) OPT(I)+1).|P| \le \max\bigl(A,\ (1+g)\,OPT(I) + 1\bigr).∣P∣≤max(A, (1+g)OPT(I)+1).

The lemma justifies setting small pieces aside, packing the rest carefully, and adding the small pieces greedily at the end.

Formalization Note The paper takes ggg "between 0 and 1"; the statement allows g=1g = 1g=1, which ALGORITHM 1 reaches when n(I)=2n(I) = 2n(I)=2. Insertion is any execution of the any-fit process (any order of pieces, any fitting bin).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
