Let H\mathcal HH be a real Hilbert space, M∈M(H)M\in\mathcal M(\mathcal H)M∈M(H) a maximally monotone operator, λ>0\lambda>0λ>0, and let (xi)i≥1(x_i)_{i\ge1}(xi)i≥1, (yi)i≥0(y_i)_{i\ge0}(yi)i≥0 be generated by the general proximal point method with step coefficients h={hi,k}h=\{h_{i,k}\}h={hi,k}. Let x∗∈X∗(M)x_*\in X_*(M)x∗∈X∗(M) and R>0R>0R>0 with ∥y0−x∗∥≤R\|y_0-x_*\|\le R∥y0−x∗∥≤R. Fix N≥1N\ge1N≥1. If (a2,…,aN,bN,c)(a_2,\dots,a_N,b_N,c)(a2,…,aN,bN,c) is feasible for the dual problem (D), i.e. a2,…,aN,bN,c≥0a_2,\dots,a_N,b_N,c\ge0a2,…,aN,bN,c≥0 and

∑i=2NaiAi−1,i(h)+bNBN(h)+cC−uNuN⊤⪰0,\sum_{i=2}^{N}a_iA_{i-1,i}(h)+b_NB_N(h)+cC-u_Nu_N^\top\succeq0,i=2∑NaiAi−1,i(h)+bNBN(h)+cC−uNuN⊤⪰0,

then

1R2 ∥xN−yN−1∥2 ≤ c.\frac1{R^2}\,\|x_N-y_{N-1}\|^2\ \le\ c .R21∥xN−yN−1∥2 ≤ c.

In words: the optimal value BD(h)\mathcal B_D(h)BD(h) of (D) is an upper bound on the worst-case fixed-point residual (17) of the general proximal point method after NNN steps, which is how the paper computes worst-case rates for a given hhh by solving an SDP.

Formalization Note The step size λ\lambdaλ is written lam. The resolvent step xi+1=JλM(yi)x_{i+1}=J_{\lambda M}(y_i)xi+1=JλM(yi) is encoded relationally as λ−1(yi−xi+1)∈Mxi+1\lambda^{-1}(y_i-x_{i+1})\in Mx_{i+1}λ−1(yi−xi+1)∈Mxi+1; for monotone MMM and λ>0\lambda>0λ>0 this determines xi+1x_{i+1}xi+1, and maximality makes the resolvent defined everywhere (Minty). The general method has no x0x_0x0, so the initial-distance condition is on y0y_0y0, as in the last constraint of (17). NNN is a natural number with N≥1N\ge1N≥1 and y (N - 1) is yN−1y_{N-1}yN−1. The statement holds in every real Hilbert space; no dimension hypothesis is imposed.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
