Call a self-map τ\tauτ of a metric space (X,d)(X, d)(X,d) an ε\varepsilonε-isometry if its metric distortion is at most ε\varepsilonε, i.e. ∣d(τu,τv)−d(u,v)∣≤ε|d(\tau u, \tau v) - d(u, v)| \le \varepsilon∣d(τu,τv)−d(u,v)∣≤ε for all u,v∈Xu, v \in Xu,v∈X.

  1. On every metric space, if τ1\tau_1τ1 is an ε1\varepsilon_1ε1-isometry and τ2\tau_2τ2 is an ε2\varepsilon_2ε2-isometry, then τ1∘τ2\tau_1 \circ \tau_2τ1∘τ2 is an (ε1+ε2)(\varepsilon_1 + \varepsilon_2)(ε1+ε2)-isometry; in particular
τ1,τ2 are ε-isometries  ⟹  τ1∘τ2 is a 2ε-isometry.\tau_1, \tau_2 \text{ are } \varepsilon\text{-isometries} \implies \tau_1 \circ \tau_2 \text{ is a } 2\varepsilon\text{-isometry}.τ1,τ2 are ε-isometries⟹τ1∘τ2 is a 2ε-isometry.
  1. The ε\varepsilonε-isometries are not closed under composition: for every ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0 there is a continuous bijection τ:R→R\tau : \mathbb R \to \mathbb Rτ:R→R which is an ε\varepsilonε-isometry while τ∘τ\tau \circ \tauτ∘τ is not.

This is why "small deformations" do not form a group, and why the book replaces exact invariance to deformations by deformation stability.

Formalization Note The book's side-note gives no space; part 2 makes "violating the closure property" concrete on the real line, with a continuous bijection so that the counterexample is a genuine deformation. Part 1 holds on pseudometric spaces.

/-- Bronstein et al., §3.3, side-note p. 20: "E.g., the composition of two ε-isometries is a
2ε-isometry, violating the closure property." (An ε-isometry has metric distortion at most ε,
§4.4, p. 51.)
1. On any (pseudo)metric space, the composition of an `ε₁`-isometry and an `ε₂`-isometry is an
   `(ε₁ + ε₂)`-isometry; in particular two `ε`-isometries compose to a `2ε`-isometry.
2. Closure fails: for every `ε > 0` there is a continuous bijection `τ : ℝ → ℝ` that is an
   `ε`-isometry while `τ ∘ τ` is not. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
