This is a first-order Taylor remainder estimate under an oscillation bound on the derivative.

Let f,f′:R→Rf,f':\mathbb R\to\mathbb Rf,f′:R→R and suppose that fff has derivative f′(x)f'(x)f′(x) at every xxx. For x,y∈Rx,y\in\mathbb Rx,y∈R, assume that there is M∈RM\in\mathbb RM∈R such that

∣f′(w)−f′(x)∣≤M|f'(w)-f'(x)|\le M∣f′(w)−f′(x)∣≤M

for every www in the unordered interval uIcc⁡(x,y)\operatorname{uIcc}(x,y)uIcc(x,y). Then

∣f(y)−f(x)−f′(x)(y−x)∣≤M∣y−x∣.|f(y)-f(x)-f'(x)(y-x)|\le M|y-x|.∣f(y)−f(x)−f′(x)(y−x)∣≤M∣y−x∣.

This bound controls the first-order Taylor error using only the oscillation of the derivative along the segment between the two points.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
