Let V⊆XV\subseteq XV⊆X be a nonempty closed convex feasible set in a finite-dimensional real normed space. Let ψ\psiψ be closed and λ\lambdaλ-strongly convex on V∩int⁡XV\cap\operatorname{int}XV∩intX, with λ>0\lambda>0λ>0, and let x1,…,xT+1x_1,\ldots,x_{T+1}x1,…,xT+1 be an OMD run with constant learning rate η>0\eta>0η>0 entirely in int⁡X\operatorname{int}XintX. For T≥1T\ge1T≥1, every feasible comparator sequence u1,…,uTu_1,\ldots,u_Tu1,…,uT satisfies

DRegret⁡T(u1,…,uT)≤Bψ(uT;x1)+Q∑t=2T∥ut−ut−1∥η+η2λ∑t=1T∥gt∥∗2−Bψ(uT;xT+1)η,Q=max⁡1≤t≤T∥∇ψ(xt)−∇ψ(x1)∥∗.\operatorname{DRegret}_T(u_1,\ldots,u_T)\le \frac{B_\psi(u_T;x_1)+Q\sum_{t=2}^T\lVert u_t-u_{t-1}\rVert}{\eta} +\frac{\eta}{2\lambda}\sum_{t=1}^T\lVert g_t\rVert_*^2 -\frac{B_\psi(u_T;x_{T+1})}{\eta}, \qquad Q=\max_{1\le t\le T}\lVert\nabla\psi(x_t)-\nabla\psi(x_1)\rVert_*.DRegretT(u1,…,uT)≤ηBψ(uT;x1)+Q∑t=2T∥ut−ut−1∥+2ληt=1∑T∥gt∥∗2−ηBψ(uT;xT+1),Q=1≤t≤Tmax∥∇ψ(xt)−∇ψ(x1)∥∗.

The theorem measures the cost of comparator movement while retaining the final Bregman improvement. A constant comparator has zero path length.

Formalization Note The horizon and the two denominators are positive. The model uses real-valued losses on the evaluated domain and relative subgradients on VVV, which are weaker than the book's full-space convention but suffice for the displayed comparison. The OMD run includes the interior condition and all permissible argmin choices.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
