Consider a two-stage robust binary program PO\mathcal{PO}PO with objective uncertainty: a nonempty bounded polyhedral uncertainty set Ξ\XiΞ, first-stage set XβŠ†R+N\mathcal X\subseteq\mathbb R^N_+XβŠ†R+N and finite second-stage set YβŠ†{0,1}M\mathcal Y\subseteq\{0,1\}^MYβŠ†{0,1}M. Let dim⁑Y\dim\mathcal YdimY be the affine dimension of Y\mathcal YY and rk⁑Q\operatorname{rk}QrkQ the rank of the second-stage cost matrix QQQ. Then for every number of policies

KΒ β‰₯Β min⁑{dim⁑Y,Β rk⁑Q}+1,K\ \ge\ \min\{\dim\mathcal Y,\ \operatorname{rk}Q\}+1,KΒ β‰₯Β min{dimY,Β rkQ}+1,

the K-adaptability problem POK\mathcal{PO}_KPOK has the same optimal value as PO\mathcal{PO}PO:

opt⁑(POK)=opt⁑(PO).\operatorname{opt}(\mathcal{PO}_K)=\operatorname{opt}(\mathcal{PO}).opt(POK)=opt(PO).

Under objective uncertainty, a number of here-and-now policies that is at most linear in the dimension of the second-stage decisions, or in the rank of the cost matrix, therefore loses nothing compared with full second-stage adaptability, although Y\mathcal YY may have exponentially many elements.

Formalization Note Optimal values are in EReal (infeasibility gives +∞+\infty+∞). The theorem is stated for every KKK at or above the threshold. Matrix.rank equals the row rank. For Y=βˆ…\mathcal Y=\emptysetY=βˆ… the Lean affine dimension is 000; both optimal values are then +∞+\infty+∞.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
