Consider a stochastic program with fixed recourse (2.1): a fixed mˉ×nˉ\bar m \times \bar nmˉ×nˉ recourse matrix WWW and random data ξ=(c,q,p,T)\xi = (c, q, p, T)ξ=(c,q,p,T) with law μ\muμ, a probability measure. Let Q(x,ξ)=min⁡{q(ξ)y∣Wy=p(ξ)−T(ξ)x, y≥0}Q(x,\xi) = \min\{q(\xi)y \mid Wy = p(\xi) - T(\xi)x,\ y \ge 0\}Q(x,ξ)=min{q(ξ)y∣Wy=p(ξ)−T(ξ)x, y≥0} (with value +∞+\infty+∞ when infeasible and −∞-\infty−∞ when unbounded), Q(x)=Eξ{Q(x,ξ)}\mathcal Q(x) = E_\xi\{Q(x,\xi)\}Q(x)=Eξ{Q(x,ξ)} the expected recourse computed with the paper's extended integral (in which (+∞)+(−∞)=+∞(+\infty) + (-\infty) = +\infty(+∞)+(−∞)=+∞), and Ξ~\tilde\XiΞ~ the support of μ\muμ. Consider the three feasibility sets

  1. K2μ={x∣with probability 1 ∃y≥0, Wy=p(ξ)−T(ξ)x}K_2^\mu = \{x \mid \text{with probability } 1\ \exists y \ge 0,\ Wy = p(\xi) - T(\xi)x\}K2μ={x∣with probability 1 ∃y≥0, Wy=p(ξ)−T(ξ)x},
  2. K2p={x∣∀ξ∈Ξ~ ∃y≥0, Wy=p(ξ)−T(ξ)x}K_2^p = \{x \mid \forall \xi \in \tilde\Xi\ \exists y \ge 0,\ Wy = p(\xi) - T(\xi)x\}K2p={x∣∀ξ∈Ξ~ ∃y≥0, Wy=p(ξ)−T(ξ)x},
  3. K2s={x∣Q(x)<+∞}K_2^s = \{x \mid \mathcal Q(x) < +\infty\}K2s={x∣Q(x)<+∞}.

Assume that ξ\xiξ satisfies the weak covariance condition of Definition 2.2 (all cjc_jcj, qjpiq_j p_iqjpi and qjtikq_j t_{ik}qjtik are integrable) and that WWW has full row rank mˉ\bar mmˉ. Then

K2μ=K2p=K2s.K_2^\mu = K_2^p = K_2^s.K2μ=K2p=K2s.

The theorem says that the probabilistic, the support-based and the finite-expected-cost notions of second-stage feasibility agree, so the region where the deterministic equivalent program is finite can be described pointwise on the support.

Formalization Note. The paper writes "such as Definition 2.2"; the statement uses Definition 2.2 itself. The full row rank of WWW is the paper's standing assumption ("Without loss of generality, we can assume that WWW has full rank", p. 312); the result remains true without it. K2μK_2^\muK2μ is taken in its first form on p. 314 (∃y≥0\exists y \ge 0∃y≥0 almost surely). The paper's remark that Q(x,⋅)Q(x,\cdot)Q(x,⋅) is measurable (p. 313) is a provable fact and is not added as a hypothesis.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
