Let M≥U≥L>0M \ge U \ge L > 0M≥U≥L>0 be integers with L+U<22LUL + U < 2\sqrt{2LU}L+U<22LU, and let f(x)=LU/x+xf(x) = LU/x + xf(x)=LU/x+x for real x>0x > 0x>0. Then:

  1. for every positive integer qqq, f(q)≤LUgcd⁡(q,M)+qf(q) \le \dfrac{LU}{\gcd(q,M)} + qf(q)≤gcd(q,M)LU+q;
  2. f(L)=f(U)=L+Uf(L) = f(U) = L + Uf(L)=f(U)=L+U;
  3. fff is minimized at LU\sqrt{LU}LU: for every real x>0x > 0x>0,
f(LU)≤f(x).f\big(\sqrt{LU}\big) \le f(x).f(LU)≤f(x).

The function fff coincides with the objective of problem (5) at divisors of MMM and lies below it everywhere. It meets the level L+UL + UL+U exactly at the two ends of the interval [L,U][L, U][L,U].
