Let BBB be a self-adjoint bounded operator on a real Hilbert space, let RRR be a bijective bounded operator, and let s,ys,ys,y be vectors with s≠0s\ne0s=0. Put r=y−Bsr=y-Bsr=y−Bs and c=R−∗R−1sc=R^{-*}R^{-1}sc=R−∗R−1s. Then

Pc=[r,c]+[c,r]⟨c,s⟩−⟨r,s⟩⟨c,s⟩2[c,c]P_c=\frac{[r,c]+[c,r]}{\langle c,s\rangle} -\frac{\langle r,s\rangle}{\langle c,s\rangle^2}[c,c]Pc=⟨c,s⟩[r,c]+[c,r]−⟨c,s⟩2⟨r,s⟩[c,c]

belongs to ΠS={P∈L2(H):P=P∗, (B+P)s=y}\Pi_S=\{P\in L_2(\mathcal H):P=P^*,\ (B+P)s=y\}ΠS={P∈L2(H):P=P∗, (B+P)s=y} and is the unique minimizer of ∥R∗PR∥HS\|R^*PR\|_{\mathrm{HS}}∥R∗PR∥HS over P∈ΠSP\in\Pi_SP∈ΠS. The formula depends on RRR only through ccc.

This is the symmetric weighted least-change characterization of the update (A.7).

Formalization Note The paper says “problem (A.5)” in Proposition A.2, but (A.5) is Broyden's displayed formula; its preceding paragraph defines the symmetric optimization problem as (A.6), which is the problem stated here. The Hilbert space and basis index type are arbitrary. A continuous linear equivalence represents the bijective operator. The denominator is nonzero as a consequence of s≠0s\ne0s=0. Unique solution includes feasibility, minimality, and uniqueness among feasible minimizers.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
