In the setting of Eq. (3.18) (a C2C^2C2 objective FFF with λI≺∇2F≺ΛI\lambda I\prec\nabla^2F\prec\Lambda IλI≺∇2F≺ΛI, a Newton-like iteration with step lengths αk>0\alpha^k>0αk>0 and constants 0<μ1≤μ20<\mu_1\le\mu_20<μ1≤μ2, γ\gammaγ), let w∗w^*w∗ minimize FFF and put

ϕk=E[F(wk)−F(w∗)](3.21).\phi_k=E[F(w^k)-F(w^*)]\qquad(3.21).ϕk=E[F(wk)−F(w∗)](3.21).

Then for every k≥1k\ge1k≥1, F(wk)F(w^k)F(wk) and F(wk+1)F(w^{k+1})F(wk+1) are integrable and

ϕk+1≤(1−2αkμ1λ) ϕk+Λ2(αkμ2)2γ2.\phi_{k+1}\le(1-2\alpha^k\mu_1\lambda)\,\phi_k+\frac\Lambda2(\alpha^k\mu_2)^2\gamma^2 .ϕk+1≤(1−2αkμ1λ)ϕk+2Λ(αkμ2)2γ2.

This is the recursion from which the O(1/k)O(1/k)O(1/k) rate of Theorem 3.2 is derived.

Formalization Note The step lengths are general (αk>0\alpha^k>0αk>0); the recursion does not use αk=β/k\alpha^k=\beta/kαk=β/k. The page's intermediate inequality (3.20) contains the typo [F(wk−F(w∗)][F(w^k-F(w^*)][F(wk−F(w∗)] and is not restated.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
