Lemma 3.1 — an odd pair (W,T)(W,T)(W,T) with T⊆E(xˉ)T\subseteq E(\bar x)T⊆E(xˉ) yields an odd cut-set of G(xˉ,d)G(\bar x,d)G(xˉ,d) of equal capacity

Let G=(V,E)G=(V,E)G=(V,E) be a finite simple graph, bbb a vector of positive integers on the nodes, ddd a vector of positive integers on the edges, and xˉ\bar xxˉ a feasible solution of the linear relaxation of (3.1), with node slacks sˉ=b−Axˉ\bar s=b-A\bar xsˉ=b−Axˉ. Let G(xˉ,d)G(\bar x,d)G(xˉ,d) be the labelled graph with node set V~=V∪{S}∪V∗\tilde V=V\cup\{S\}\cup V_*V~=V∪{S}∪V∗ and edge weights yˉ\bar yyˉ, built with any choice of scan orientation.

Let W⊆VW\subseteq VW⊆V and T⊆(W:V−W)∩E(xˉ)T\subseteq (W:V-W)\cap E(\bar x)T⊆(W:V−W)∩E(xˉ) be such that b(W)+d(T)b(W)+d(T)b(W)+d(T) is odd. Then there exists an odd cut-set (U:V~−U)(U:\tilde V-U)(U:V~−U) in G(xˉ,d)G(\bar x,d)G(xˉ,d) with S∈V~−US\in\tilde V-US∈V~−U such that

xˉ(W:V−W)+d(T)−2xˉ(T)+sˉ(W)=yˉ(U:V~−U).(3.8)\bar x(W:V-W)+d(T)-2\bar x(T)+\bar s(W)=\bar y(U:\tilde V-U). \tag{3.8}xˉ(W:V−W)+d(T)−2xˉ(T)+sˉ(W)=yˉ(U:V~−U).(3.8)

Together with (3.7) this shows that every violated blossom inequality produces an odd cut-set of G(xˉ,d)G(\bar x,d)G(xˉ,d) of capacity less than one.

Formalization Note E(xˉ)E(\bar x)E(xˉ) is the set of edges with xˉe>0\bar x_e>0xˉe>0. Feasibility of xˉ\bar xxˉ and positivity of bbb and ddd are the standing assumptions of Section 3 and are stated as hypotheses. The orientation tail (the end of each edge scanned first) is universally quantified.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
