Let Ω={x∈E:⟨cj,x⟩≥δj, j=1,…,m}\Omega = \{x \in E : \langle c_j, x \rangle \ge \delta_j,\ j = 1, \dots, m\}Ω={x∈E:⟨cj,x⟩≥δj, j=1,…,m} be a polyhedral set in a finite-dimensional real inner product space EEE, with active sets A(x)={j:⟨cj,x⟩=δj}A(x) = \{j : \langle c_j, x \rangle = \delta_j\}A(x)={j:⟨cj,x⟩=δj}, and let f:E→Rf : E \to \mathbb{R}f:E→R be continuously differentiable on Ω\OmegaΩ. Let {xk}\{x_k\}{xk} be an arbitrary sequence in Ω\OmegaΩ converging to x∗x^*x∗, and let ∇Ωf\nabla_\Omega f∇Ωf be the projected gradient. If

lim⁡k→∞∥∇Ωf(xk)∥=0\lim_{k \to \infty} \|\nabla_\Omega f(x_k)\| = 0k→∞lim∥∇Ωf(xk)∥=0

and x∗x^*x∗ is nondegenerate (the active normals {cj:j∈A(x∗)}\{c_j : j \in A(x^*)\}{cj:j∈A(x∗)} are linearly independent and ∇f(x∗)=∑j∈A(x∗)λj∗cj\nabla f(x^*) = \sum_{j \in A(x^*)} \lambda^*_j c_j∇f(x∗)=∑j∈A(x∗)λj∗cj with every λj∗>0\lambda^*_j > 0λj∗>0), then

A(xk)=A(x∗)for all k sufficiently large.A(x_k) = A(x^*) \quad \text{for all } k \text{ sufficiently large.}A(xk)=A(x∗)for all k sufficiently large.

The result does not depend on how the sequence is generated: any method whose iterates stay feasible, converge, and drive the projected gradient to zero identifies the optimal active set after finitely many iterations, after which it behaves like a method for an equality-constrained problem.

Formalization Note The constraints are indexed by Fin m; "for all kkk sufficiently large" is ∀ᶠ k in atTop, and the conclusion is equality of finite sets of indices, not inclusion.

/-- Calamai–Moré, Theorem 4.1 (p. 106): let `Ω = {x : ⟨c_j, x⟩ ≥ δ_j, j = 1, …, m}` be
polyhedral, `f` continuously differentiable on `Ω`, and `{x_k}` an arbitrary sequence in `Ω`
converging to `x*`. If `‖∇_Ω f(x_k)‖ → 0` and `x*` is nondegenerate, then
`A(x_k) = A(x*)` for all `k` sufficiently large. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
