Let PPP be a projection-valued measure on a complex Hilbert space H\mathfrak HH, let f,gf, gf,g be Borel functions and α,β∈C\alpha, \beta \in \mathbb{C}α,β∈C. Then

αP(f)+βP(g)⊆P(αf+βg),D(αP(f)+βP(g))=D∣f∣+∣g∣(3.38)\alpha P(f) + \beta P(g) \subseteq P(\alpha f + \beta g), \qquad \mathfrak D(\alpha P(f) + \beta P(g)) = \mathfrak D_{|f|+|g|} \qquad (3.38)αP(f)+βP(g)⊆P(αf+βg),D(αP(f)+βP(g))=D∣f∣+∣g∣(3.38)

and

P(f)P(g)⊆P(fg),D(P(f)P(g))=Dg∩Dfg(3.39).P(f)P(g) \subseteq P(fg), \qquad \mathfrak D(P(f)P(g)) = \mathfrak D_g \cap \mathfrak D_{fg} \qquad (3.39).P(f)P(g)⊆P(fg),D(P(f)P(g))=Dg∩Dfg(3.39).

Here αP(f)+βP(g)\alpha P(f) + \beta P(g)αP(f)+βP(g) has domain D(P(f))∩D(P(g))\mathfrak D(P(f)) \cap \mathfrak D(P(g))D(P(f))∩D(P(g)), P(f)P(g)P(f)P(g)P(f)P(g) has domain {ψ∈D(P(g))∣P(g)ψ∈D(P(f))}\{\psi \in \mathfrak D(P(g)) \mid P(g)\psi \in \mathfrak D(P(f))\}{ψ∈D(P(g))∣P(g)ψ∈D(P(f))}, and S⊆TS \subseteq TS⊆T means that TTT extends SSS.

Formalization Note. Sum and scalar multiple are Mathlib's LinearPMap operations (the domain of a sum is the intersection of domains, and αT\alpha TαT has the domain of TTT also for α=0\alpha = 0α=0, as for operators in the book), and ⊆\subseteq⊆ is the order ≤ on LinearPMaps. Mathlib has no composition of arbitrary partially defined operators, so (3.39) is written out: a vector lies in the natural domain of P(f)P(g)P(f)P(g)P(f)P(g) iff it lies in Dg∩Dfg\mathfrak D_g \cap \mathfrak D_{fg}Dg∩Dfg, and for every such vector ψ\psiψ one has ψ∈D(P(fg))\psi \in \mathfrak D(P(fg))ψ∈D(P(fg)) and P(f)(P(g)ψ)=P(fg)ψP(f)(P(g)\psi) = P(fg)\psiP(f)(P(g)ψ)=P(fg)ψ.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

Setting.

  • HHH is a complex Hilbert space, possibly {0}\{0\}{0}.
  • PPP maps subsets of R\mathbb{R}R to bounded operators on HHH and satisfies the imported predicate IsProjValuedMeasure, whose content is not shown.
  • f,g:R→Cf, g : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}f,g:R→C are Borel measurable, not assumed bounded.
  • α,β∈C\alpha, \beta \in \mathbb{C}α,β∈C are arbitrary.
  • P(h)P(h)P(h) denotes the imported partially defined operator spectralIntegral P h, with domain D(P(h))\mathfrak{D}(P(h))D(P(h)).
  • Dh\mathfrak{D}_hDh denotes the imported set spectralDomain P h.
  • fgfgfg, αf+βg\alpha f + \beta gαf+βg and ∣f∣+∣g∣|f| + |g|∣f∣+∣g∣ are pointwise, with ∣f∣+∣g∣|f|+|g|∣f∣+∣g∣ viewed as a complex-valued function.

For partially defined operators, the operations are Mathlib's:

  • αP(f)\alpha P(f)αP(f) keeps the domain of P(f)P(f)P(f), even when α=0\alpha = 0α=0.
  • A sum is defined on the intersection of the two domains.

So αP(f)+βP(g)\alpha P(f) + \beta P(g)αP(f)+βP(g) has domain D(P(f))∩D(P(g))\mathfrak{D}(P(f)) \cap \mathfrak{D}(P(g))D(P(f))∩D(P(g)) for all α,β\alpha, \betaα,β. "S≤TS \le TS≤T" means that TTT extends SSS: D(S)⊆D(T)\mathfrak{D}(S) \subseteq \mathfrak{D}(T)D(S)⊆D(T) and Sψ=TψS\psi = T\psiSψ=Tψ on D(S)\mathfrak{D}(S)D(S).

Conclusion. The theorem asserts all four of the following:

  1. P(αf+βg)P(\alpha f + \beta g)P(αf+βg) extends αP(f)+βP(g)\alpha P(f) + \beta P(g)αP(f)+βP(g).
  2. The domain of αP(f)+βP(g)\alpha P(f) + \beta P(g)αP(f)+βP(g) equals, as a set, D∣f∣+∣g∣\mathfrak{D}_{|f|+|g|}D∣f∣+∣g∣.
  3. For every ψ∈H\psi \in Hψ∈H:
(ψ∈D(P(g)) and P(g)ψ∈D(P(f)))  ⟺  ψ∈Dg∩Dfg.\big(\psi \in \mathfrak{D}(P(g)) \text{ and } P(g)\psi \in \mathfrak{D}(P(f))\big) \iff \psi \in \mathfrak{D}_g \cap \mathfrak{D}_{fg}.(ψ∈D(P(g)) and P(g)ψ∈D(P(f)))⟺ψ∈Dg∩Dfg.
  1. For every ψ∈D(P(g))\psi \in \mathfrak{D}(P(g))ψ∈D(P(g)) with P(g)ψ∈D(P(f))P(g)\psi \in \mathfrak{D}(P(f))P(g)ψ∈D(P(f)), we have ψ∈D(P(fg))\psi \in \mathfrak{D}(P(fg))ψ∈D(P(fg)) and
P(f)(P(g)ψ)=P(fg)ψ.P(f)\big(P(g)\psi\big) = P(fg)\psi.P(f)(P(g)ψ)=P(fg)ψ.

Degenerate cases.

  • When α=β=0\alpha = \beta = 0α=β=0, (1) says that P(0)P(0)P(0) extends the zero map on D(P(f))∩D(P(g))\mathfrak{D}(P(f)) \cap \mathfrak{D}(P(g))D(P(f))∩D(P(g)). Part (2) still identifies that intersection with D∣f∣+∣g∣\mathfrak{D}_{|f|+|g|}D∣f∣+∣g∣, independent of α\alphaα and β\betaβ.
  • If H={0}H = \{0\}H={0}, all domains are {0}\{0\}{0} and every part holds trivially.
  • If IsProjValuedMeasure were unsatisfiable, the theorem would be vacuous.
