This states that mollification commutes with the Laplacian for smooth compactly supported scalar functions.

Let VVV be a finite-dimensional real inner-product space, let mmm be an additive Haar measure, and let φ\varphiφ be a smooth bump centered at 000. If g:V→Rg:V\to\mathbb{R}g:V→R is smooth and compactly supported, then for every x∈Vx\in Vx∈V,

Δ((φnormed∗g)(x))=(φnormed∗Δg)(x).\Delta\bigl((\varphi_{\mathrm{normed}}\ast g)(x)\bigr) =\bigl(\varphi_{\mathrm{normed}}\ast\Delta g\bigr)(x).Δ((φnormed∗g)(x))=(φnormed∗Δg)(x).

Here Δ\DeltaΔ is Laplacian.laplacian. This provides the second-order analogue of the gradient commutation identity.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
