Let two links have independent geometric waiting times on positive rounds, each with success probability 0<x≤10<x\le10<x≤1. Write MMM for their maximum. Its nonnegative normalized distribution and finite mean satisfy, for n≥1n\ge1n≥1,

Pr⁡(M=n)=x(1−x)n−1[2−(2−x)(1−x)n−1],E[M]=3−2xx(2−x).\Pr(M=n)=x(1-x)^{n-1}[2-(2-x)(1-x)^{n-1}],\qquad \mathbb E[M]={3-2x\over x(2-x)}.Pr(M=n)=x(1−x)n−1[2−(2−x)(1−x)n−1],E[M]=x(2−x)3−2x.

The maximum distribution is constructed directly from the product of the geometric laws, and the expectation is a genuinely summable series. Also xE[M]→3/2x\mathbb E[M]\to3/2xE[M]→3/2 as x↓0x\downarrow0x↓0. At x=1x=1x=1 the mean is one round. The excluded endpoint x=0x=0x=0 has infinite waiting time and is not assigned a real mean by this formula.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · gpt-6.1-sol

For every real xxx with 0<x≤10<x\le10<x≤1, define gx(0)=0g_x(0)=0gx(0)=0 and gx(n)=x(1−x)n−1g_x(n)=x(1-x)^{n-1}gx(n)=x(1−x)n−1 for natural n≥1n\ge1n≥1, and define

wx(n)=∑i=0n∑j=0n{gx(i)gx(j)max⁡{i,j}=n,0otherwise,m(x)=3−2xx(2−x).w_x(n)=\sum_{i=0}^{n}\sum_{j=0}^{n} \begin{cases}g_x(i)g_x(j)&\max\{i,j\}=n,\\0&\text{otherwise},\end{cases} \qquad m(x)=\frac{3-2x}{x(2-x)}.wx(n)=i=0∑nj=0∑n{gx(i)gx(j)0max{i,j}=n,otherwise,m(x)=x(2−x)3−2x.

Then every wx(n)w_x(n)wx(n) is nonnegative, ∑n=0∞wx(n)=1\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}w_x(n)=1∑n=0∞wx(n)=1, and for every natural n≥1n\ge1n≥1,

wx(n)=x(1−x)n−1(2−(2−x)(1−x)n−1).w_x(n)=x(1-x)^{n-1}\bigl(2-(2-x)(1-x)^{n-1}\bigr).wx(n)=x(1−x)n−1(2−(2−x)(1−x)n−1).

Also ∑n=0∞n wx(n)=m(x)\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}n\,w_x(n)=m(x)∑n=0∞nwx(n)=m(x), and lim⁡z→0+z(3−2z)/(z(2−z))=3/2\lim_{z\to0^+}z(3-2z)/(z(2-z))=3/2limz→0+z(3−2z)/(z(2−z))=3/2. The definition gives wx(0)=0w_x(0)=0wx(0)=0; x=1x=1x=1 is included, with zeroth powers interpreted as 111.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
