Let π\piπ be a stochastic policy for a finite MDP and 0≤γ<10 \le \gamma < 10≤γ<1. If a function vvv on the states satisfies, for every state sss,

v(s)=∑aπ(a∣s)∑s′,rp(s′,r∣s,a)[r+γv(s′)],v(s) = \sum_a \pi(a \mid s) \sum_{s', r} p(s', r \mid s, a)\big[r + \gamma v(s')\big],v(s)=a∑π(a∣s)s′,r∑p(s′,r∣s,a)[r+γv(s′)],

then v=vπv = v_\piv=vπ, the state-value function (3.12).

Together with (3.14) this says that the value function vπv_\pivπ is the unique solution to its Bellman equation, so that vπv_\pivπ can be computed by solving a linear system (as the book does for the gridworld of Example 3.5).

Formalization Note For γ=1\gamma = 1γ=1 uniqueness needs termination of every episode, which the book does not state; the statement is for 0≤γ<10 \le \gamma < 10≤γ<1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
