The ratio αi(x)/βi(x)\alpha_i(x)/\beta_i(x)αi(x)/βi(x) is at most card(Ji)/Ω\sqrt{\mathrm{card}(J_i)}/\Omegacard(Ji)/Ω, and this is attained (corrected)

Let A=(aij)A=(a_{ij})A=(aij) be the inequality matrix of an uncertain linear program, JiJ_iJi the uncertain-entry set of row iii, and Ω>0\Omega>0Ω>0. For x∈Rnx\in\mathbb{R}^nx∈Rn put

αi(x)=∑j∈Ji∣aij∣∣xj∣,βi(x)=Ω∑j∈Jiaij2xj2.\alpha_i(x)=\sum_{j\in J_i}|a_{ij}||x_j|,\qquad \beta_i(x)=\Omega\sqrt{\sum_{j\in J_i}a_{ij}^2x_j^2}.αi(x)=j∈Ji∑∣aij∣∣xj∣,βi(x)=Ωj∈Ji∑aij2xj2.

Then

  1. for every xxx,  Ω αi(x)≤card(Ji) βi(x)\ \Omega\,\alpha_i(x) \le \sqrt{\mathrm{card}(J_i)}\ \beta_i(x) Ωαi(x)≤card(Ji) βi(x);
  2. if Ji≠∅J_i\neq\emptysetJi=∅ and aij≠0a_{ij}\neq0aij=0 for all j∈Jij\in J_ij∈Ji, there is xxx with βi(x)>0\beta_i(x)>0βi(x)>0 and Ω αi(x)=card(Ji) βi(x)\Omega\,\alpha_i(x) = \sqrt{\mathrm{card}(J_i)}\ \beta_i(x)Ωαi(x)=card(Ji) βi(x).

Hence the largest value of αi(x)/βi(x)\alpha_i(x)/\beta_i(x)αi(x)/βi(x) over xxx with βi(x)>0\beta_i(x)>0βi(x)>0 is card(Ji)/Ω\sqrt{\mathrm{card}(J_i)}/\Omegacard(Ji)/Ω. This quantifies by how much the (IRC) constraint can exceed the (RC) one.

Formalization Note Corrected statement. The page says "the ratio αi(x)/βi(x)\alpha_i(x)/\beta_i(x)αi(x)/βi(x) can be as large as card(Ji)\sqrt{\mathrm{card}(J_i)}card(Ji)", but its βi\beta_iβi contains the factor Ω\OmegaΩ, so the supremum of the printed ratio is card(Ji)/Ω\sqrt{\mathrm{card}(J_i)}/\Omegacard(Ji)/Ω; the printed value is that of αi(x)/∑j∈Jiaij2xj2\alpha_i(x)\big/\sqrt{\sum_{j\in J_i}a_{ij}^2x_j^2}αi(x)/∑j∈Jiaij2xj2. The statement is multiplied out to avoid division.

/-- **The ratio `α_i/β_i`** (Ben-Tal–Nemirovski 2000, §3.1, p. 420), corrected for the factor `Ω`.
With `α_i(x) = ∑_{j ∈ J_i} |a_{ij}| |x_j|` and `β_i(x) = Ω √(∑_{j ∈ J_i} a_{ij}² x_j²)`, `Ω > 0`:
(a) `Ω α_i(x) ≤ √card(J_i) · β_i(x)` for every `x`, and
(b) if `J_i` is nonempty and `a_{ij} ≠ 0` for every `j ∈ J_i`, some `x` has `β_i(x) > 0` and
`Ω α_i(x) = √card(J_i) · β_i(x)`.
So the largest value of `α_i/β_i` is `√card(J_i)/Ω` (the page prints `√card(J_i)`). -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
