This theorem states that a partial sum of martingale differences is orthogonal to the next difference.

Let PPP be a probability measure on Ω\OmegaΩ, let (Gk)k∈N(\mathcal G_k)_{k\in\mathbb N}(Gk)k∈N be an increasing family of measurable spaces dominated by the ambient measurable space, and let Yk:Ω→RY_k:\Omega\to\mathbb RYk:Ω→R. Assume:

  1. every YkY_kYk belongs to L2(P)L^2(P)L2(P);
  2. every YkY_kYk is strongly measurable in the ambient space;
  3. E[Yk∣Gk]=0\mathbb E[Y_k\mid\mathcal G_k]=0E[Yk∣Gk]=0 almost everywhere.

Then, for every n∈Nn\in\mathbb Nn∈N,

∫(∑i<nYi)Yn dP=0.\int\left(\sum_{i<n}Y_i\right)Y_n\,dP=0.∫(i<n∑Yi)YndP=0.

The conditional expectation is the Lean definition condExp; the result is a general martingale-difference orthogonality tool.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
