Let P⊆RdP\subseteq\mathbb R^dP⊆Rd be an H-polyhedron cut out by nnn linear inequalities, and suppose its vertices (extreme points) can be listed in mmm slots, allowing duplicates. Then the padded vertex-edge diameter of PPP is at most m−1m-1m−1:

DiamLE⁡(P, m−1).\operatorname{DiamLE}(P,\, m-1).DiamLE(P,m−1).

In particular, if PPP has vvv vertices then DiamLE⁡(P,v−1)\operatorname{DiamLE}(P, v-1)DiamLE(P,v−1). Boundedness is not assumed: the platform connectivity theorem already supplies some finite walk between any two vertices of an arbitrary H-polyhedron, and a shortest such walk cannot repeat a vertex, so its length is at most one less than the number of distinct vertices.

This is the classical trivial bound diam⁡(G)≤∣V(G)∣−1\operatorname{diam}(G)\le |V(G)|-1diam(G)≤∣V(G)∣−1 for a connected graph, applied to the 111-skeleton. It does not produce a uniform polynomial in n+dn+dn+d, because a ddd-polytope may have exponentially many vertices.

Formalization Note The listing is a map Fin m → EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin d) that hits every extreme point. If m=0m=0m=0 and there are no extreme points the claim is vacuous; if extreme points exist then m≥1m\ge 1m≥1. Stationary padding makes the predicate monotone in the budget.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
