Let Ω\OmegaΩ be a nonempty closed convex subset of a finite-dimensional real inner product space EEE and PPP the projection into Ω\OmegaΩ. Given x∈Ex \in Ex∈E and d∈Ed \in Ed∈E, the function

ψ(α)=∥P(x+αd)−x∥α,α>0,\psi(\alpha) = \frac{\|P(x + \alpha d) - x\|}{\alpha}, \qquad \alpha > 0,ψ(α)=α∥P(x+αd)−x∥,α>0,

is antitone (nonincreasing) on (0,∞)(0, \infty)(0,∞).

This result, due to Gafni and Bertsekas, compares the projected steps for two different step sizes along the same direction; it is the key tool for handling steps αk\alpha_kαk that are not bounded away from zero.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
