There is m0m_0m0 such that the following holds for every m≥m0m\ge m_0m≥m0. Let X1,…,XNX_1,\dots,X_NX1,…,XN be any finite number of independent Bernoulli random variables (each takes only the values 000 and 111) on a probability space, with pi=Pr⁡[Xi=1]p_i=\Pr[X_i=1]pi=Pr[Xi=1] and ∑ipi≤1\sum_i p_i\le 1∑ipi≤1. Let X=X1+⋯+XNX=X_1+\dots+X_NX=X1+⋯+XN. Then

Pr⁡[X>3log⁡mlog⁡log⁡m]≤1m2.\Pr\Big[X>\frac{3\log m}{\log\log m}\Big]\le\frac1{m^2}.Pr[X>loglogm3logm]≤m21.

This tail bound controls how often a single item is claimed in the randomized-rounding preallocation: the number of bundles containing a fixed item is such a sum with expectation at most 111.

Formalization Note The printed lemma mixes nnn and mmm ("X1,…,XnX_1,\dots,X_nX1,…,Xn (for sufficiently large nnn) … for 1≤i≤m1\le i\le m1≤i≤m … X=X1+⋯+XmX=X_1+\dots+X_mX=X1+⋯+Xm"). The statement here is the reading its application in §3.1.1 requires and that is true: the number NNN of variables is arbitrary, "sufficiently large" refers to mmm (the existential m0m_0m0), and the hypothesis ∑ipi=1\sum_i p_i=1∑ipi=1 is relaxed to ∑ipi≤1\sum_i p_i\le 1∑ipi≤1, which is what E[Zj]≤1E[Z_j]\le1E[Zj]≤1 provides; the case ∑ipi=1\sum_i p_i=1∑ipi=1 is included. log⁡\loglog is the natural logarithm (the paper does not fix a base). Variables are real-valued, measurable, and independent in the sense of Mathlib's iIndepFun.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
