There is an arrangement a0,a1,a2,…a_0,a_1,a_2,\dotsa0,a1,a2,… of all the integers, each appearing exactly once, with no monotone 444-term arithmetic progression:

∃f:N≃Z  such that there are no i1<i2<i3<i4 with f(i1),f(i2),f(i3),f(i4) an increasing or decreasing AP.\exists f:\mathbb{N}\simeq\mathbb{Z}\ \text{ such that there are no } i_1<i_2<i_3<i_4 \text{ with } f(i_1),f(i_2),f(i_3),f(i_4) \text{ an increasing or decreasing AP.}∃f:N≃Z  such that there are no i1<i2<i3<i4 with f(i1),f(i2),f(i3),f(i4) an increasing or decreasing AP.

Since every permutation of Z\mathbb{Z}Z contains a monotone 333-term progression (Davis–Entringer–Graham–Simmons 1977), this statement says that the answer to Erdős Problem 195 is 333. Its negation says that the answer is 444 (Adenwalla 2024 gives the upper bound 444).

Formalization Note Permutations are f : ℕ ≃ ℤ; HasMonotoneAP is copied verbatim from formal-conjectures (FormalConjecturesForMathlib/Combinatorics/AP/Basic.lean): a list of indices l with l.Pairwise (· < ·) whose image is an arithmetic progression of length kkk, listed forwards or backwards.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
