Let MMM be a compact, Hausdorff, simply connected topological 333-manifold without boundary, modelled on Euclidean 333-space (a charted space over R3=\mathbb{R}^3 = R3= EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin 3)). Then MMM is homotopy equivalent to the standard 333-sphere:

M≃hS3={ x∈R4:∥x∥=1 }.M \simeq_h \mathbb{S}^3 = \{\, x \in \mathbb{R}^4 : \lVert x\rVert = 1 \,\}.M≃hS3={x∈R4:∥x∥=1}.

This is the classical, purely homotopy-theoretic half of the three-dimensional Poincaré conjecture; it does not use geometrization or Ricci flow. A simply connected closed 333-manifold is orientable, so Poincaré duality forces its homology to coincide with that of S3S^3S3, namely H0=H3=ZH_0 = H_3 = \mathbb{Z}H0=H3=Z and H1=H2=0H_1 = H_2 = 0H1=H2=0. The Hurewicz theorem then gives π3(M)≅H3(M)≅Z\pi_3(M) \cong H_3(M) \cong \mathbb{Z}π3(M)≅H3(M)≅Z, and a generator is represented by a map f:S3→Mf : S^3 \to Mf:S3→M that induces isomorphisms on all homology groups. Since both MMM and S3S^3S3 are simply connected CW complexes, Whitehead's theorem promotes fff to a homotopy equivalence.

As a milestone this is the "easy" input to the topological Poincaré conjecture: combined with the statement that every homotopy 333-sphere is homeomorphic to S3S^3S3, it yields that a compact simply connected 333-manifold is homeomorphic to S3S^3S3.

Formalization Note The sphere S3\mathbb{S}^3S3 is Metric.sphere (0 : EuclideanSpace ℝ (Fin (3 + 1))) 1 with the subspace topology, and ≃h\simeq_h≃h is Mathlib's ContinuousMap.HomotopyEquiv (notation ≃ₕ, scoped in the ContinuousMap namespace). No second-countability assumption is imposed, matching the parent statement PoincareFormalization.nonempty_homeomorph_sphere_three.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
