Potential for a closed symmetric Hessian on R3\mathbb{R}^3R3

by Ethan Cheung Wang · Oct 21, 2026 · Mathlib 0df444a (Lean v4.33.1)

Let H:R3→Sym2(R3)H:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathrm{Sym}^2(\mathbb{R}^3)H:R3→Sym2(R3) be a C∞C^\inftyC∞ field of symmetric matrices that is closed as a Hessian, i.e.

∂kHij=∂jHikfor all spatial indices i,j,k.\partial_k H_{ij}=\partial_j H_{ik}\qquad\text{for all spatial indices }i,j,k.∂kHij=∂jHikfor all spatial indices i,j,k.

Then there exists a C∞C^\inftyC∞ potential φ:R3→R\varphi:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}φ:R3→R with

∂j∂iφ=Hij.\partial_j\partial_i\varphi = H_{ij}.∂j∂iφ=Hij.

The proof applies the ContDiff Poincaré lemma twice: first to each row of HHH (producing a closed 111-form AAA), then to AAA (producing φ\varphiφ). This is the constant-ttt slice of the Trautman recovery Poincaré step in Malament/Weatherall Proposition 2.2.

Formalization Note. Uses NewtonCartan.contDiff_primitive_of_closed_oneForm. Child of exists_potential_of_spatial_F.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
