Setting. Fix M,d∈NM,d\in\mathbb{N}M,d∈N. The children of a vertex are labelled 0,1,…,M0,1,\dots,M0,1,…,M: child MMM is the default child, and 0,…,M−10,\dots,M-10,…,M−1 are the nondefault children, ordered as integers. A node is a finite sequence PPP of children (the path from the root) of length ∣P∣<d|P|<d∣P∣<d, and a leaf is a sequence of children of length exactly ddd; P⌢jP\frown jP⌢j denotes PPP followed by the child jjj. Bits are written 000 (false) and 111 (true). For β∈N\beta\in\mathbb{N}β∈N and y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R}y∈R let

κβ(y)=⌊2β+2 (y−⌊y⌋)⌋∈{0,1,…,2β+2−1}\kappa_\beta(y)=\big\lfloor 2^{\beta+2}\,(y-\lfloor y\rfloor)\big\rfloor\in\{0,1,\dots,2^{\beta+2}-1\}κβ(y)=⌊2β+2(y−⌊y⌋)⌋∈{0,1,…,2β+2−1}

be the index of the cell containing yyy in the 111-periodic grid of mesh 2−β−22^{-\beta-2}2−β−2.

Window data. Fix also g,r0∈Ng,r_0\in\mathbb{N}g,r0∈N. Call a sequence of children P≠∅P\neq\varnothingP=∅ with ∣P∣≤d|P|\le d∣P∣≤d an edge (it stands for the edge into its last vertex). A window datum WWW consists of maps r:N→Nr:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}r:N→N and a,b,b∗a,b,b^*a,b,b∗ from finite sequences of children to N\mathbb{N}N such that, for all edges P,QP,QP,Q:

  • (i) r(d+1−∣P∣)≥1r(d+1-|P|)\ge 1r(d+1−∣P∣)≥1 and r(d+1−∣P∣)≥r0r(d+1-|P|)\ge r_0r(d+1−∣P∣)≥r0;
  • (ii) a(P)≥3a(P)\ge 3a(P)≥3;
  • (iii) b(P)+1=a(P)+r(d+1−∣P∣)b(P)+1=a(P)+r(d+1-|P|)b(P)+1=a(P)+r(d+1−∣P∣), so the window {a(P),…,b(P)}\{a(P),\dots,b(P)\}{a(P),…,b(P)} of PPP consists of r(d+1−∣P∣)r(d+1-|P|)r(d+1−∣P∣) consecutive scale indices;
  • (iv) if PPP is a proper prefix of QQQ, then b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q);
  • (v) if P=V⌢iP=V\frown iP=V⌢i and Q=V⌢j⌢V′Q=V\frown j\frown V'Q=V⌢j⌢V′ with i<ji<ji<j (for any sequences V,V′V,V'V,V′), then b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q)b(P)+g<a(Q);
  • (vi) if PPP is a prefix of QQQ, then b(P)≤b(Q)≤b∗(P)b(P)\le b(Q)\le b^*(P)b(P)≤b(Q)≤b∗(P);
  • (vii) b∗(P)+1≤a(P)+2 r(d+1−∣P∣)b^*(P)+1\le a(P)+2\,r(d+1-|P|)b∗(P)+1≤a(P)+2r(d+1−∣P∣).

For a node UUU, all child edges U⌢iU\frown iU⌢i have windows of the same length rU=r(d−∣U∣)r_U=r(d-|U|)rU=r(d−∣U∣).

Tables and routing. The selector table of a node PPP and a nondefault child jjj has resolution b(P⌢j)b(P\frown j)b(P⌢j), and the terminal table of a leaf LLL has resolution b(L)b(L)b(L). A pair of tables ω=(ωS,ωT)\omega=(\omega_S,\omega_T)ω=(ωS,ωT) assigns bits ωS(P,j,m)\omega_S(P,j,m)ωS(P,j,m) for m<2b(P⌢j)+2m<2^{b(P\frown j)+2}m<2b(P⌢j)+2 and ωT(L,m)\omega_T(L,m)ωT(L,m) for m<2b(L)+2m<2^{b(L)+2}m<2b(L)+2. For y∈Ry\in\mathbb{R}y∈R let σ(P,j,y)=ωS(P,j,κb(P⌢j)(y))\sigma(P,j,y)=\omega_S(P,j,\kappa_{b(P\frown j)}(y))σ(P,j,y)=ωS(P,j,κb(P⌢j)(y)) for nodes PPP (and σ(P,j,y)=0\sigma(P,j,y)=0σ(P,j,y)=0 for longer sequences), let the first-success choice c(P,y)c(P,y)c(P,y) be the smallest nondefault jjj with σ(P,j,y)=1\sigma(P,j,y)=1σ(P,j,y)=1, or the default MMM if there is none, and route by ρ0(P,y)=P\rho_0(P,y)=Pρ0(P,y)=P, ρn+1(P,y)=ρn(P,y)⌢c(ρn(P,y),y)\rho_{n+1}(P,y)=\rho_n(P,y)\frown c(\rho_n(P,y),y)ρn+1(P,y)=ρn(P,y)⌢c(ρn(P,y),y), ρn(y)=ρn(∅,y)\rho_n(y)=\rho_n(\varnothing,y)ρn(y)=ρn(∅,y). (These objects depend on ωS\omega_SωS, which is suppressed from the notation.) The routed set of ω\omegaω is

E(ω)={y∈R: ωT(ρd(y),κb(ρd(y))(y))=1}.E(\omega)=\big\{y\in\mathbb{R}:\ \omega_T\big(\rho_d(y),\kappa_{b(\rho_d(y))}(y)\big)=1\big\}.E(ω)={y∈R: ωT(ρd(y),κb(ρd(y))(y))=1}.

For a node UUU and a nondefault child iii, the local test QU,i(ω,y)Q_{U,i}(\omega,y)QU,i(ω,y) equals 111 exactly when ωS(U,i,κb(U⌢i)(y))=1\omega_S(U,i,\kappa_{b(U\frown i)}(y))=1ωS(U,i,κb(U⌢i)(y))=1 and ωT(L,κb(L)(y))=1\omega_T(L,\kappa_{b(L)}(y))=1ωT(L,κb(L)(y))=1, where L=ρd−∣U∣−1(U⌢i,y)L=\rho_{d-|U|-1}(U\frown i,y)L=ρd−∣U∣−1(U⌢i,y) is the leaf reached by routing at yyy from the child U⌢iU\frown iU⌢i.

Center data. The center exposure of a selector table ωS\omega_SωS at x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}x∈R is the vector Ξx(ωS)=(ωS(P,j,κb(P⌢j)(x)))(P,j)\Xi_x(\omega_S)=\big(\omega_S(P,j,\kappa_{b(P\frown j)}(x))\big)_{(P,j)}Ξx(ωS)=(ωS(P,j,κb(P⌢j)(x)))(P,j) of all selector bits read at xxx, one for every node PPP and nondefault child jjj. The point xxx is stable if σ(P,j,x)=σ(P,j,x+t 2−n)\sigma(P,j,x)=\sigma(P,j,x+t\,2^{-n})σ(P,j,x)=σ(P,j,x+t2−n) for every node PPP, nondefault child jjj, integer n>b(P⌢j)+gn>b(P\frown j)+gn>b(P⌢j)+g, scale t∈[1,2]t\in[1,2]t∈[1,2] and selector table ωS\omega_SωS. Finally, xxx is exceptional for a set B⊆RB\subseteq\mathbb{R}B⊆R if there is t∈[1,2]t\in[1,2]t∈[1,2] such that x+t 2−n∉Bx+t\,2^{-n}\notin Bx+t2−n∈/B for every integer n≥1n\ge 1n≥1.

Theorem. Let WWW be a window datum, UUU a node, k∈Nk\in\mathbb{N}k∈N, x∈Rx\in\mathbb{R}x∈R, and let ξ\xiξ assign a bit to every pair (P,j)(P,j)(P,j) of a node and a nondefault child. Assume that xxx is stable and that on the exposure atom {Ξx=ξ}\{\Xi_x=\xi\}{Ξx=ξ} the route of xxx takes its first default at UUU after kkk steps: for every selector table ωS\omega_SωS with Ξx(ωS)=ξ\Xi_x(\omega_S)=\xiΞx(ωS)=ξ,

ρk(x)=U,c(U,x)=M,c(ρl(x),x)≠M  for all l<k.\rho_k(x)=U,\qquad c(U,x)=M,\qquad c(\rho_l(x),x)\neq M\ \text{ for all } l<k .ρk(x)=U,c(U,x)=M,c(ρl(x),x)=M  for all l<k.

Then there is a finite set R⊆[1,2]R\subseteq[1,2]R⊆[1,2] with

∣R∣≤1+M rU 22rU+2|R|\le 1+M\,r_U\,2^{2r_U+2}∣R∣≤1+MrU22rU+2

such that for every pair of tables ω=(ωS,ωT)\omega=(\omega_S,\omega_T)ω=(ωS,ωT) with Ξx(ωS)=ξ\Xi_x(\omega_S)=\xiΞx(ωS)=ξ for which xxx is exceptional for the routed set E(ω)E(\omega)E(ω), some t∈Rt\in Rt∈R satisfies

QU,i(ω, x+t 2−(a(U⌢i)+j))=0for all 0≤i<M and 0≤j<rU.Q_{U,i}\big(\omega,\ x+t\,2^{-(a(U\frown i)+j)}\big)=0\qquad\text{for all } 0\le i<M \text{ and } 0\le j<r_U .QU,i(ω, x+t2−(a(U⌢i)+j))=0for all 0≤i<M and 0≤j<rU.

Exceptionality is an existential statement over the continuum of scales t∈[1,2]t\in[1,2]t∈[1,2]. On a fixed exposure atom on which the route of xxx first defaults at UUU, the theorem replaces it by the failure of all M rUM\,r_UMrU local tests in the child windows of UUU at one of finitely many representative scales, and the set RRR is chosen before the tables. This reduces the probability that xxx is exceptional to a union bound over RRR of fixed-scale failure events.

Formalization Note The window datum is W : WindowData (M + 1) d g r₀ (the first parameter is the total number of children); the selector and terminal resolutions are selectorEndpoints W and terminalEndpoints W, the choice rule is selectorChoice, the routed set is routedSet, the local test is localQ W U ω i, stability is StableAt W x and the exposure is centerExposure. Exceptionality is membership in Auxiliary.exceptionalCenters (routedSet …) (Set.Ici 1) (fun n => (2 : ℝ)⁻¹ ^ n). The bound on ∣R∣|R|∣R∣ is the cardinality of a Finset.
