Let S⊂RS \subset \RS⊂R be a non-empty subset of the set of real numbers such that SSS is bounded above. Then SSS admits a supremum in R\RR. This is known as the '''least upper bound property''' of the real numbers. Similarly, let S⊂RS \subset \RS⊂R be a non-empty subset of the set of real numbers such that SSS is bounded below. Then SSS admits an infimum in R\RR. This is sometimes called the '''greatest lower bound property''' of the real numbers. The two properties taken together are called the '''continuum property of R\RR'''. This can also be stated as The set R\RR of real numbers is Dedekind complete.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
