Let QQQ and EEE be finite sets with operations ⋄Q\diamond_Q⋄Q and ⋄E\diamond_E⋄E, and let ⋄\diamond⋄ be an operation on Q×EQ\times EQ×E, with blocks as in Counterexample structure (n). The block (x,y)(x,y)(x,y) is permutation-twisted when there are permutations φx,y,ψx,y\varphi_{x,y},\psi_{x,y}φx,y,ψx,y of EEE with

(x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄Qy,  φx,y(s)⋄Eψx,y(t))for all s,t∈E.(x,s)\diamond(y,t)=(x\diamond_Q y,\;\varphi_{x,y}(s)\diamond_E\psi_{x,y}(t))\quad\text{for all } s,t\in E.(x,s)⋄(y,t)=(x⋄Qy,φx,y(s)⋄Eψx,y(t))for all s,t∈E.

(E,⋄E)(E,\diamond_E)(E,⋄E) is right-cancellative when a⋄Eb=a′⋄Eba\diamond_E b=a'\diamond_E ba⋄Eb=a′⋄Eb gives a=a′a=a'a=a′.

Theorem. Suppose that

  1. (Q×E,⋄)(Q\times E,\diamond)(Q×E,⋄) satisfies E677, and (Q,⋄Q)(Q,\diamond_Q)(Q,⋄Q) satisfies E255;
  2. every block is permutation-twisted, except that the blocks (e,e)(e,e)(e,e) with e⋄Qe=ee\diamond_Q e=ee⋄Qe=e (the idempotent diagonal blocks) may have any table;
  3. E255 holds at every point (e,s)(e,s)(e,s) with e⋄Qe=ee\diamond_Q e=ee⋄Qe=e;
  4. (E,⋄E)(E,\diamond_E)(E,⋄E) is right-cancellative.

Then (Q×E,⋄)(Q\times E,\diamond)(Q×E,⋄) satisfies E255. No equation on EEE, no equation on QQQ other than E255, and no property of the twists other than bijectivity is assumed.

Proof idea. Let (x,s)∈Q×E(x,s)\in Q\times E(x,s)∈Q×E with x⋄Qx≠xx\diamond_Q x\ne xx⋄Qx=x, and let v=(x⋄Qx)⋄Qxv=(x\diamond_Q x)\diamond_Q xv=(x⋄Qx)⋄Qx, so v⋄Qx=xv\diamond_Q x=xv⋄Qx=x by E255 in QQQ. The block (v,x)(v,x)(v,x) is permutation-twisted, and a↦φv,x(a)⋄Eψv,x(s)a\mapsto\varphi_{v,x}(a)\diamond_E\psi_{v,x}(s)a↦φv,x(a)⋄Eψv,x(s) is injective on the finite set EEE, so it is onto: some (v,a)(v,a)(v,a) satisfies (v,a)⋄(x,s)=(x,s)(v,a)\diamond(x,s)=(x,s)(v,a)⋄(x,s)=(x,s). In a finite E677 magma, such an element gives E255 at (x,s)(x,s)(x,s) (ETP blueprint, Lemma 13.2). The points over an idempotent are hypothesis 3.

Use in a counterexample search. In a minimum counterexample, hypotheses 1 and 3 hold for every congruence that is neither equality nor universal (see (n)). So over a finite right-cancellative fibre, no choice of permutation twists off the idempotent diagonal blocks gives a minimum counterexample.

Prior work. The construction is B. Le Floch's (ETP Zulip thread "FINITE: 677 -> 255", 2024-12-18), with endomorphisms Sx,y,Tx,yS_{x,y},T_{x,y}Sx,y,Tx,y of the fibre as twists, Tx,yT_{x,y}Tx,y bijective. On 2024-12-23 he also proposed permutations as twists, in the general form s⋄x,yt=hx,y(fx,y(s)⋄gx,y(t))s\diamond_{x,y}t=h_{x,y}(f_{x,y}(s)\diamond g_{x,y}(t))s⋄x,yt=hx,y(fx,y(s)⋄gx,y(t)) ("I suspect Terry's last construction could involve a pair of permutations instead of powers of a single one"); the twists here are the case h=idh=\mathrm{id}h=id. On 2024-12-25 he wrote: "If the base 677 magma is right-cancellative then the resulting magma is right-cancellative" (see also 2024-12-18: "This implies right-invertibility, which implies 255."). The proof above is the fixer argument of the proof of ETP blueprint Lemma 13.4 (affine extensions; B. Le Floch, same thread, 2024-12-14), with right cancellation in EEE in place of the injectivity of the affine map. This theorem adds a Lean proof, a base QQQ that satisfies only E255 (no right cancellation), and arbitrary idempotent diagonal blocks.

Formalization Note The twists are maps φ ψ : Q → Q → Equiv.Perm E with no further property. htw says that every block (x, y) with ¬ (x = y ∧ opQ x x = x) is permutation-twisted, hidem is hypothesis 3, and hrc says that every right multiplication of opE is injective. The theorem is about the product type; a magma that is only isomorphic to a product needs a transport step that is not part of this statement.
