Let DDD be a probability distribution on Z=X×YZ = X \times YZ=X×Y, let the cost satisfy 0≤c(y′,y)≤M0 \le c(y', y) \le M0≤c(y′,y)≤M, and let AAA be a symmetric deterministic learning algorithm whose losses are measurable. Let S=(z1,…,zm)∼DmS = (z_1, \dots, z_m) \sim D^mS=(z1,…,zm)∼Dm with m≥2m \ge 2m≥2, and let z,z′∼Dz, z' \sim Dz,z′∼D be independent of each other and of SSS. Write R=R(A,S)R = R(A,S)R=R(A,S), Rloo=Rloo(A,S)R_{\mathrm{loo}} = R_{\mathrm{loo}}(A,S)Rloo=Rloo(A,S), and R∖i=R(A,S∖i)=Ez[ℓ(AS∖i,z)]R^{\setminus i} = R(A, S^{\setminus i}) = \mathbb E_z[\ell(A_{S^{\setminus i}}, z)]R∖i=R(A,S∖i)=Ez[ℓ(AS∖i,z)]. Then for any indices i≠ji \ne ji=j,

ES[(R−Rloo)2]≤ES,z,z′[ℓ(AS,z)ℓ(AS,z′)]−2 ES,z[ℓ(AS,z)ℓ(AS∖i,zi)]+ES[ℓ(AS∖i,zi)ℓ(AS∖j,zj)]+MmES[R∖i]−1mES[ℓ(AS∖i,zi)ℓ(AS∖j,zj)].\mathbb E_S\bigl[(R - R_{\mathrm{loo}})^2\bigr] \le \mathbb E_{S,z,z'}[\ell(A_S,z)\ell(A_S,z')] - 2\,\mathbb E_{S,z}[\ell(A_S,z)\ell(A_{S^{\setminus i}},z_i)] + \mathbb E_S[\ell(A_{S^{\setminus i}},z_i)\ell(A_{S^{\setminus j}},z_j)] + \frac{M}{m}\mathbb E_S\bigl[R^{\setminus i}\bigr] - \frac1m \mathbb E_S[\ell(A_{S^{\setminus i}},z_i)\ell(A_{S^{\setminus j}},z_j)] .ES[(R−Rloo)2]≤ES,z,z′[ℓ(AS,z)ℓ(AS,z′)]−2ES,z[ℓ(AS,z)ℓ(AS∖i,zi)]+ES[ℓ(AS∖i,zi)ℓ(AS∖j,zj)]+mMES[R∖i]−m1ES[ℓ(AS∖i,zi)ℓ(AS∖j,zj)].

This is the leave-one-out half of the generalized Rogers–Wagner lemma used to prove Lemma 9.

Formalization Note As printed. The lemma is printed "for any learning algorithm", but its proof uses the standing assumptions of §2.1 (symmetry, measurability) and 0≤c≤M0 \le c \le M0≤c≤M; these are hypotheses here, and m≥2m \ge 2m≥2 is implicit in i≠ji \ne ji=j. Expectations over (S,z)(S,z)(S,z) and (S,z,z′)(S,z,z')(S,z,z′) are integrals against Dm⊗DD^m \otimes DDm⊗D and (Dm⊗D)⊗D(D^m \otimes D) \otimes D(Dm⊗D)⊗D.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
