Exact point count for a diagonal equation. Let FFF be a finite field, d,e≥1d, e \ge 1d,e≥1, and let χ\chiχ and λ\lambdaλ be multiplicative characters of FFF valued in C\mathbb{C}C of orders exactly m=gcd⁡(#F×,d)m = \gcd(\#F^\times, d)m=gcd(#F×,d) and n=gcd⁡(#F×,e)n = \gcd(\#F^\times, e)n=gcd(#F×,e). Then

#{(x,y)∈F2:xd+ye=1}=#F+∑i=1m−1∑j=1n−1J(χi,λj).\#\{(x,y) \in F^2 : x^d + y^e = 1\} = \#F + \sum_{i=1}^{m-1}\sum_{j=1}^{n-1} J(\chi^i,\lambda^j).#{(x,y)∈F2:xd+ye=1}=#F+i=1∑m−1j=1∑n−1J(χi,λj).

The main term is #F\#F#F, the count one expects from a curve of this shape, and the deviation is a sum of (m−1)(n−1)(m-1)(n-1)(m−1)(n−1) Jacobi sums. In particular the count is exactly #F\#F#F when m=1m = 1m=1 or n=1n = 1n=1.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
