Let C\mathcal CC (checks) and O\mathcal OO (observables) be finite families of finite subsets of a set α\alphaα. Call a finite S⊆αS\subseteq\alphaS⊆α a logical if ∣S∩c∣|S\cap c|∣S∩c∣ is even for every c∈Cc\in\mathcal Cc∈C and ∣S∩o∣|S\cap o|∣S∩o∣ is odd for some o∈Oo\in\mathcal Oo∈O. If zzz is a logical of minimum cardinality among all finite logicals, then for every nonempty T⊊zT\subsetneq zT⊊z,

¬(∀c∈C, ∣T∩c∣ is even).\neg\big(\forall c\in\mathcal C,\ |T\cap c|\ \text{is even}\big).¬(∀c∈C, ∣T∩c∣ is even).

This lemma justifies the 'kernel' prune of the source's exhaustive distance search: a partial support that already contains a nonempty set even on every check cannot extend to a minimum-weight logical.

What the Lean code literally says, in plain math · claude-opus-5-5

This is a purely combinatorial statement that uses none of the bivariate-bicycle definitions. Let α\alphaα be any type with decidable equality. Let C\mathcal CC ("checks") and O\mathcal OO ("observables") be arbitrary finite families of finite subsets of α\alphaα (no relation between them is assumed), and let z⊆αz\subseteq\alphaz⊆α be a finite set. Call a finite set SSS admissible if

∣S∩c∣ is even for every c∈Cand∣S∩o∣ is odd for some o∈O.|S\cap c|\text{ is even for every }c\in\mathcal C\quad\text{and}\quad |S\cap o|\text{ is odd for some }o\in\mathcal O.∣S∩c∣ is even for every c∈Cand∣S∩o∣ is odd for some o∈O.

Hypotheses. (i) zzz is admissible; (ii) zzz has minimum cardinality among admissible sets: ∣z∣≤∣S∣|z|\le|S|∣z∣≤∣S∣ for every admissible finite SSS; (iii) TTT is a finite set with T⊊zT\subsetneq zT⊊z (strict subset) and T≠∅T\ne\varnothingT=∅.

Conclusion. It is not the case that ∣T∩c∣|T\cap c|∣T∩c∣ is even for all c∈Cc\in\mathcal Cc∈C; equivalently, there is some check c∈Cc\in\mathcal Cc∈C with ∣T∩c∣|T\cap c|∣T∩c∣ odd.

Edge cases: if O=∅\mathcal O=\varnothingO=∅, hypothesis (i) is unsatisfiable and the statement is vacuous. If C=∅\mathcal C=\varnothingC=∅, the conclusion is literally false ("not true"), so the statement then says the hypotheses can never all hold, i.e. that a minimum admissible zzz has no nonempty proper subset (forces ∣z∣≤1|z|\le1∣z∣≤1). If ∣z∣≤1|z|\le 1∣z∣≤1 no such TTT exists and the statement is vacuous for that zzz. Only parities of intersection sizes are involved; there is no linear-algebraic or F2\mathbb F_2F2-vector structure, and the conclusion concerns TTT only (not z∖Tz\setminus Tz∖T).

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
