This statement gives the covariance form of the Cauchy–Schwarz inequality for square-integrable real random variables.

Let (Ω,μ)(\Omega,\mu)(Ω,μ) be a probability space and let X,Y:Ω→RX,Y:\Omega\to\mathbb{R}X,Y:Ω→R satisfy X,Y∈L2(μ)X,Y\in L^2(\mu)X,Y∈L2(μ), expressed by MemLp X 2 μ and MemLp Y 2 μ. Then

Cov⁡μ(X,Y)2≤Var⁡μ(X) Var⁡μ(Y).\operatorname{Cov}_{\mu}(X,Y)^2 \le \operatorname{Var}_{\mu}(X)\,\operatorname{Var}_{\mu}(Y).Covμ(X,Y)2≤Varμ(X)Varμ(Y).

This is a general measure-theoretic inequality on an arbitrary measurable space and is used as a deterministic covariance estimate in posterior calculations.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
