Fix X≥8.36X\ge 8.36X≥8.36 and, for ν∈(1/2,1]\nu\in(1/\sqrt2,1]ν∈(1/2,1], put (Dusart's (2.18) and (2.38), i.e. (2.25) with m=2m=2m=2)

G0(ν)=ν2(ν−log⁡(2π)X),G1(ν)=ν22ν2−1(ν+1−2log⁡(2π)2X),G_0(\nu)=\nu^2\Bigl(\nu-\frac{\log(2\pi)}{X}\Bigr),\qquad G_1(\nu)=\frac{\nu^2}{2\nu^2-1}\Bigl(\nu+\frac{1-2\log(2\pi)}{2X}\Bigr),G0(ν)=ν2(ν−Xlog(2π)),G1(ν)=2ν2−1ν2(ν+2X1−2log(2π)),

and (2.32)

k(ν)=X2π(G03G1)1/2e−2X(1−ν) e−X(1−ν)2/ν.k(\nu)=\frac{X}{2\pi}\Bigl(\frac{G_0^3}{G_1}\Bigr)^{1/2}e^{-2X(1-\nu)}\,e^{-X(1-\nu)^2/\nu}.k(ν)=2πX(G1G03)1/2e−2X(1−ν)e−X(1−ν)2/ν.

Then there is a real ν\nuν with k(ν)=1k(\nu)=1k(ν)=1 and

0.97<1−12Xlog⁡X2π<ν<1.0.97<1-\frac{1}{2X}\log\frac{X}{2\pi}<\nu<1 .0.97<1−2X1log2πX<ν<1.

This is Lemme 51 of Dusart's habilitation (display (2.39)). The proof there: for ν∈(1/2,1]\nu\in(1/\sqrt2,1]ν∈(1/2,1], G0G_0G0 increases and G1G_1G1 decreases, so kkk is increasing; k(ν)→0k(\nu)\to0k(ν)→0 as ν→1/2+\nu\to1/\sqrt2^{+}ν→1/2+ and k(1)>1k(1)>1k(1)>1 exactly when XXX exceeds 33(4πcos⁡(13arctan⁡(8π)2/27−1)+3log⁡(2π))≈8.358\frac{\sqrt3}{3}\bigl(4\pi\cos(\frac13\arctan\sqrt{(8\pi)^2/27-1})+\sqrt3\log(2\pi)\bigr)\approx8.35833(4πcos(31arctan(8π)2/27−1)+3log(2π))≈8.358; finally k(ν0)<1k(\nu_0)<1k(ν0)<1 at ν0=1−12Xlog⁡X2π\nu_0=1-\frac1{2X}\log\frac X{2\pi}ν0=1−2X1log2πX, whose minimum over XXX is 1−14πe≈0.97071-\frac1{4\pi e}\approx0.97071−4πe1≈0.9707, attained at X=2πeX=2\pi eX=2πe. The root ν\nuν is the smoothing parameter of the proof of Théorème 45.

Formalization note. (G03/G1)1/2(G_0^3/G_1)^{1/2}(G03/G1)1/2 is Real.sqrt of the quotient, which is positive in the relevant range. The statement only needs existence; uniqueness, also proved in the source, is not asserted.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
