discrete-geometrydistinct-distances

For an indexed configuration p=(p1,…,pn)p=(p_1,\dots,p_n)p=(p1,…,pn) of points in the plane, an index iii and a real number TTT, ClosePairRow p i T is the set of indices

{ j: j≠i, ∣pi−pj∣2≤T }.\{\,j:\ j\ne i,\ |p_i-p_j|^2\le T\,\}.{j: j=i, ∣pi−pj∣2≤T}.

The threshold TTT is a squared distance. Let R(T)R(T)R(T) be the number of distance values r∈{∣pa−pb∣:a≠b}r\in\{|p_a-p_b|: a\ne b\}r∈{∣pa−pb∣:a=b} with r2≤Tr^2\le Tr2≤T, let DDD be the number of all distance values, and put Q=3D−n+1Q=3D-n+1Q=3D−n+1. If n≥1n\ge1n≥1 and every circle about a configuration point pip_ipi contains at most three indices j≠ij\ne ij=i, then every row satisfies

3R(T)−Q≤#{ j: j≠i, ∣pi−pj∣2≤T }≤3R(T),3R(T)-Q\le \#\{\,j:\ j\ne i,\ |p_i-p_j|^2\le T\,\}\le 3R(T),3R(T)−Q≤#{j: j=i, ∣pi−pj∣2≤T}≤3R(T),

so two rows at the same threshold differ by at most QQQ.

Formalization Note Indices are elements of Fin n, and the set is a Finset (Fin n).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
