Positive powers of fundamental units still generate a subgroup of finite index

Let KKK be a number field and u1,…,uru_1,\dots,u_ru1,…,ur a fundamental system of global units. For every positive integer mmm, the subgroup generated by u1m,…,urmu_1^m,\dots,u_r^mu1m,…,urm has finite index in OK×\mathcal O_K^\timesOK×:

[OK×:⟨u1m,…,urm⟩]<∞.[\mathcal O_K^\times:\langle u_1^m,\dots,u_r^m\rangle]<\infty.[OK×:⟨u1m,…,urm⟩]<∞.

This lets one replace fundamental units by powers chosen to enter a small ppp-adic logarithm ball, while retaining the finite-index hypothesis needed by the logarithmic criterion.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
