Let C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y] be the ring of complex polynomials in two variables. As in the note, a point z∈Cz\in\mathbb Cz∈C of the plane is given the coordinates (X,Y)=(z,zˉ)(X,Y)=(z,\bar z)(X,Y)=(z,zˉ), so that P∈C[X,Y]P\in\mathbb C[X,Y]P∈C[X,Y] is read on the plane through z↦P(z,zˉ)z\mapsto P(z,\bar z)z↦P(z,zˉ); monomials XaYbX^aY^bXaYb are indexed by exponent pairs (a,b)∈N2(a,b)\in\mathbb N^2(a,b)∈N2. We also use the rings C[t]\mathbb C[t]C[t] and C[t][Y]\mathbb C[t][Y]C[t][Y] (polynomials in YYY with coefficients in C[t]\mathbb C[t]C[t]), an integer m∈Nm\in\mathbb Nm∈N, and complex parameters α,ζ,a,b,c,v,z\alpha,\zeta,a,b,c,v,zα,ζ,a,b,c,v,z.

The basic object is the real locus of PPP in complex coordinates,

Z(P)={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0}.Z(P)=\{z\in\mathbb C : P(z,\bar z)=0\}.Z(P)={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0}.

Around it the file defines:

  1. Substitution endomorphisms of C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y]: the rotation pullback P(X,Y)↦P(ζX,ζ−1Y)P(X,Y)\mapsto P(\zeta X,\zeta^{-1}Y)P(X,Y)↦P(ζX,ζ−1Y); the translation pullback P(X,Y)↦P(X+c, Y+cˉ)P(X,Y)\mapsto P(X+c,\,Y+\bar c)P(X,Y)↦P(X+c,Y+cˉ) along z↦z+cz\mapsto z+cz↦z+c; the reflection pullback P(X,Y)↦P(aY, aˉX)P(X,Y)\mapsto P(aY,\,\bar aX)P(X,Y)↦P(aY,aˉX) along z↦azˉz\mapsto a\bar zz↦azˉ; and the conjugate swap P↦P‾(Y,X)P\mapsto\overline P(Y,X)P↦P(Y,X), where P‾\overline PP has the conjugate coefficients.
  2. The group of rotations about the origin preserving Z(P)Z(P)Z(P): the subgroup of C×\mathbb C^\timesC× formed by the uuu with ∣u∣=1|u|=1∣u∣=1 and uz∈Z(P)  ⟺  z∈Z(P)uz\in Z(P)\iff z\in Z(P)uz∈Z(P)⟺z∈Z(P) for every z∈Cz\in\mathbb Cz∈C, together with its inclusion into the multiplicative monoid of C\mathbb CC.
  3. Euclidean symmetries in complex affine form. For S⊆CS\subseteq\mathbb CS⊆C, a pair (a,b)∈C2(a,b)\in\mathbb C^2(a,b)∈C2 is a direct symmetry of SSS if ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1 and az+b∈S  ⟺  z∈Saz+b\in S\iff z\in Saz+b∈S⟺z∈S for all zzz, and an opposite symmetry of SSS if ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1 and azˉ+b∈S  ⟺  z∈Sa\bar z+b\in S\iff z\in Sazˉ+b∈S⟺z∈S for all zzz. For PPP the file forms the set of direct symmetry pairs of Z(P)Z(P)Z(P), the set of opposite ones, and their disjoint union.
  4. The condition that Z(P)Z(P)Z(P) is not a circle: Z(P)≠{z:∣z−c∣=R}Z(P)\ne\{z : |z-c|=R\}Z(P)={z:∣z−c∣=R} for every c∈Cc\in\mathbb Cc∈C and every real R>0R>0R>0.
  5. Lines: the restriction homomorphism C[X,Y]→C[s]\mathbb C[X,Y]\to\mathbb C[s]C[X,Y]→C[s], X↦z+vsX\mapsto z+vsX↦z+vs, Y↦zˉ+vˉsY\mapsto\bar z+\bar vsY↦zˉ+vˉs, and the line polynomial vˉX−vY−(vˉz−vzˉ)\bar vX-vY-(\bar vz-v\bar z)vˉX−vY−(vˉz−vzˉ), which vanishes at (w,wˉ)(w,\bar w)(w,wˉ) for every w=z+svw=z+svw=z+sv with s∈Rs\in\mathbb Rs∈R.
  6. Nested coordinates: the C\mathbb CC-algebra isomorphism C[X,Y]≅C[Y][X]\mathbb C[X,Y]\cong\mathbb C[Y][X]C[X,Y]≅C[Y][X] making XXX the outer variable, and the evaluation of nested polynomials at a point (x,y)∈C2(x,y)\in\mathbb C^2(x,y)∈C2.

Finally, for the chart X=tYX=tYX=tY of equation (7), it defines

Am,α(t)=αtm+αˉ,Bm(t)=t(tm+1),Hm,α=Am,α(t)+Bm(t) Y2∈C[t][Y],A_{m,\alpha}(t)=\alpha t^m+\bar\alpha,\qquad B_m(t)=t(t^m+1),\qquad H_{m,\alpha}=A_{m,\alpha}(t)+B_m(t)\,Y^2\in\mathbb C[t][Y],Am,α(t)=αtm+αˉ,Bm(t)=t(tm+1),Hm,α=Am,α(t)+Bm(t)Y2∈C[t][Y],

together with the reversed quadratic Bm(t)+Am,α(t) Y2B_m(t)+A_{m,\alpha}(t)\,Y^2Bm(t)+Am,α(t)Y2.

These objects are the vocabulary in which the degree bounds are formalized. The curve CCC of Theorem 1 is Z(P)Z(P)Z(P) for its complexification PPP, and the non-circle condition is the hypothesis that CCC is not a circle; the rotation pullback is the substitution in the weight criterion (4); the rotation group about the origin and the sets of symmetry pairs parametrize the symmetries studied in Lemma 3 and counted in Theorem 1; the line restriction and the line polynomial serve the exclusion of translations in the proof of Lemma 3. The polynomials Am,αA_{m,\alpha}Am,α, BmB_mBm and Hm,αH_{m,\alpha}Hm,α are those of equation (7), the double-cover chart used in the proof of Lemma 4.

Formalization Note: Polynomials in two variables are MvPolynomial (Fin 2) ℂ, with XXX and YYY the variables indexed 000 and 111. The rotation pullback is defined for every ζ∈C\zeta\in\mathbb Cζ∈C, with Lean's convention 0−1=00^{-1}=00−1=0. Symmetries are recorded by their parameters (a,b)(a,b)(a,b); their comparison with actual isometries of C\mathbb CC is a separate statement. Besides definitions, the file keeps with proofs the facts later parts need, notably that Hm,αH_{m,\alpha}Hm,α and its reversal are irreducible in C[t][Y]\mathbb C[t][Y]C[t][Y] whenever m≥1m\ge1m≥1 and α≠αˉ\alpha\ne\bar\alphaα=αˉ.
