Distance of a standard Gaussian vector to a fixed subspace: if rank⁡B+d≤N\operatorname{rank}B+d\le NrankB+d≤N then P{dist⁡(g,col⁡B)2≤u}≤(eu/d)d/2\mathbb P\{\operatorname{dist}(g,\operatorname{col}B)^2\le u\}\le (eu/d)^{d/2}P{dist(g,colB)2≤u}≤(eu/d)d/2

Let ggg be a standard Gaussian vector in RN\mathbb R^NRN (independent N(0,1)N(0,1)N(0,1) coordinates) and let BBB be a fixed real N×pN\times pN×p matrix with column space col⁡B⊆RN\operatorname{col}B\subseteq\mathbb R^NcolB⊆RN. Let d≥1d\ge1d≥1 be an integer with rank⁡B+d≤N\operatorname{rank}B+d\le NrankB+d≤N, and let

dist⁡(g,col⁡B)=inf⁡c∈Rp∥g−Bc∥2.\operatorname{dist}(g,\operatorname{col}B)=\inf_{c\in\mathbb R^p}\|g-Bc\|_2 .dist(g,colB)=c∈Rpinf∥g−Bc∥2.

Then for every real uuu with 0≤u≤d0\le u\le d0≤u≤d,

P{dist⁡(g,col⁡B)2≤u}  ≤  (e ud)d/2.\mathbb P\big\{\operatorname{dist}(g,\operatorname{col}B)^2\le u\big\}\;\le\;\Big(\frac{e\,u}{d}\Big)^{d/2}.P{dist(g,colB)2≤u}≤(deu)d/2.

Choose orthonormal vectors w1,…,wdw_1,\dots,w_dw1,…,wd in (col⁡B)⊥(\operatorname{col}B)^\perp(colB)⊥ (possible since its dimension is N−rank⁡B≥dN-\operatorname{rank}B\ge dN−rankB≥d). By Bessel's inequality, ∥g−Bc∥2≥∑k≤d⟨wk,g−Bc⟩2=∑k≤d⟨wk,g⟩2\|g-Bc\|^2\ge\sum_{k\le d}\langle w_k,g-Bc\rangle^2=\sum_{k\le d}\langle w_k,g\rangle^2∥g−Bc∥2≥∑k≤d⟨wk,g−Bc⟩2=∑k≤d⟨wk,g⟩2 for every ccc. By rotation invariance of the standard Gaussian, (⟨wk,g⟩)k≤d(\langle w_k,g\rangle)_{k\le d}(⟨wk,g⟩)k≤d is a standard Gaussian vector in Rd\mathbb R^dRd, so the probability is at most P{χd2≤u}≤(eu/d)d/2\mathbb P\{\chi^2_d\le u\}\le(eu/d)^{d/2}P{χd2≤u}≤(eu/d)d/2.

This is the fixed-subspace ingredient for small-ball estimates of the smallest singular value: applied conditionally on the other columns of a Gaussian matrix, it controls the distance of one column to the span of the others.

Formalization Note. The law of ggg is Measure.pi fun _ : Fin N => gaussianReal 0 1; ∥v∥2\|v\|_2∥v∥2 is Real.sqrt (v ⬝ᵥ v); B.rank is Mathlib's Matrix.rank. The case p=0p=0p=0 (trivial subspace) is included.

standard fact: if V ⊆ R^N is a fixed subspace of dimension ρ and g is standard Gaussian, then ‖P_{V^⊥} g‖² ~ χ²_{N−ρ}; with the χ² lower tail P{χ²_d ≤ u} ≤ (eu/d)^{d/2} for 0 ≤ u ≤ d (Laurent–Massart, Ann. Statist. 28 (2000), Lemma 1, or a Chernoff bound).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
