Let γ=N(0,1)\gamma = N(0,1)γ=N(0,1) be the standard Gaussian measure on R\mathbb{R}R, and let g:R→Rg:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}g:R→R be continuously differentiable with compact support. Then

∫g2log⁡g2 dγ−(∫g2 dγ)log⁡(∫g2 dγ)  ≤  2∫(g′)2 dγ,\int g^2\log g^2\,d\gamma-\Big(\int g^2\,d\gamma\Big)\log\Big(\int g^2\,d\gamma\Big)\;\le\;2\int (g')^2\,d\gamma ,∫g2logg2dγ−(∫g2dγ)log(∫g2dγ)≤2∫(g′)2dγ,

with the convention 0log⁡0=00\log 0=00log0=0.

This is Gross's inequality restricted to compactly supported test functions. All integrals are finite, so no integrability hypotheses are needed. The general one-dimensional inequality gaussian_logsobolev_one_dim follows from this case by multiplying ggg with smooth cutoffs χ(x/n)\chi(x/n)χ(x/n) and applying dominated convergence. In turn, this case follows from gaussian_logsobolev_bounded_below applied to g2+εg^2+\varepsilong2+ε, letting ε↓0\varepsilon\downarrow 0ε↓0.

Formalization Note. The derivative is deriv g and C1C^1C1 is ContDiff ℝ 1 g. Real.log 0 = 0 matches 0log⁡0=00\log 0 = 00log0=0, and g≡0g\equiv 0g≡0 gives 0≤00\le 00≤0.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
