Let g:Rn→Rg:\mathbb R^n\to\mathbb Rg:Rn→R be twice continuously differentiable and strongly convex with constant m>0m>0m>0, with ∇g\nabla g∇g and ∇2g\nabla^2 g∇2g Lipschitz continuous with constants L1L_1L1 and L2L_2L2. Let hhh be a proper closed convex function (possibly taking the value +∞+\infty+∞) with domain DDD, and let x⋆x^\starx⋆ be an optimal solution of

min⁡x∈Rnf(x)=g(x)+h(x).\min_{x\in\mathbb R^n} f(x)=g(x)+h(x).x∈Rnminf(x)=g(x)+h(x).

Fix α∈(0,12)\alpha\in(0,\tfrac12)α∈(0,21), a backtracking factor β∈(0,1)\beta\in(0,1)β∈(0,1), and M≥mM\ge mM≥m. Let (xk,Hk,Δxk,tk)(x_k,H_k,\Delta x_k,t_k)(xk,Hk,Δxk,tk) be a run of Algorithm 1 (a proximal quasi-Newton method) from any x0∈Dx_0\in Dx0∈D such that mI⪯Hk⪯MImI\preceq H_k\preceq MImI⪯Hk⪯MI for every kkk and {Hk}\{H_k\}{Hk} satisfies the Dennis–Moré criterion

∥(Hk−∇2g(x⋆))(xk+1−xk)∥∥xk+1−xk∥→0.\frac{\|(H_k-\nabla^2 g(x^\star))(x_{k+1}-x_k)\|}{\|x_{k+1}-x_k\|}\to0 .∥xk+1−xk∥∥(Hk−∇2g(x⋆))(xk+1−xk)∥→0.

Then xkx_kxk converges to x⋆x^\starx⋆ q-superlinearly:

xk→x⋆and∥xk+1−x⋆∥=o(∥xk−x⋆∥).x_k\to x^\star\quad\text{and}\quad \|x_{k+1}-x^\star\|=o(\|x_k-x^\star\|).xk→x⋆and∥xk+1−x⋆∥=o(∥xk−x⋆∥).

This is the composite counterpart of the Dennis–Moré characterization of superlinear convergence of quasi-Newton methods, and it covers proximal BFGS and L-BFGS-type methods whenever their Hessian approximations satisfy the criterion.

Formalization Note The little-ooo is stated without quotients: for every ε>0\varepsilon>0ε>0, eventually ∥xk+1−x⋆∥≤ε∥xk−x⋆∥\|x_{k+1}-x^\star\|\le\varepsilon\|x_k-x^\star\|∥xk+1−x⋆∥≤ε∥xk−x⋆∥. The line search is backtracking from the unit step with factor β\betaβ (the least jjj with βj\beta^jβj satisfying (2.19)); a line search allowed to return any admissible step would make the theorem false. The same constant mmm bounds ggg's strong convexity and HkH_kHk from below, as printed.

/-- Theorem 3.7, arXiv:1206.1623v13, p. 14. Let `g` be twice continuously differentiable and
strongly convex with constant `m > 0`, with `∇g` and `∇²g` Lipschitz with constants `L1`, `L2`;
let `h` be proper closed convex with domain `D`, and `xstar` an optimal solution of (1.1). Let
`(x, H, Δ, t)` be a run of Algorithm 1 (a proximal quasi-Newton method) with `α ∈ (0, 1/2)` and
backtracking factor `β ∈ (0, 1)`, from any `x 0 ∈ D`. If `mI ⪯ H k ⪯ MI` for all `k`, with
`0 < m ≤ M`, and `{H k}` satisfies the Dennis–Moré criterion (3.2), then `x k → xstar`
q-superlinearly: `x k → xstar` and, for every `ε > 0`, eventually
`‖x (k+1) − xstar‖ ≤ ε ‖x k − xstar‖`. -/

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
