Existence of a Minkowski unit in a Galois number field
ProvedNumberField.Units.exists_minkowskiUnitgaloisnumber-theoryunits
Let be a number field which is Galois over , with Galois group and ring of integers . Every restricts to a ring automorphism of and hence acts on the unit group .
Theorem (existence of a Minkowski unit). There is a unit such that the subgroup generated by its Galois conjugates
has finite index in .
No hypothesis on the signature of is needed (it may be totally real, CM, or neither). Equivalently, is a cyclic -module, generated by ; this is the classical starting point for the Galois-module approach to Leopoldt's conjecture (Ax, Brumer).
In the formal statement, is Units.map (RingOfIntegers.mapRingEquiv σ.toRingEquiv) ε, the image of under the restriction of to , and finite index is Subgroup.FiniteIndex.
