Let (λ,ρ)(\lambda,\rho)(λ,ρ) be a Markov chain choice model satisfying the standing assumptions and let (x^,z^)∈H(\hat x,\hat z)\in\mathcal H(x^,z^)∈H. Define Sx^={j∈N:x^j>0}S_{\hat x}=\{j\in N:\hat x_j>0\}Sx^={j∈N:x^j>0}, assume it is nonempty, and let

αx^=min⁡{x^jPj,Sx^:j∈Sx^},\alpha_{\hat x}=\min\Big\{\frac{\hat x_j}{P_{j,S_{\hat x}}}: j\in S_{\hat x}\Big\},αx^=min{Pj,Sx^x^j:j∈Sx^},

with jx^∈Sx^j_{\hat x}\in S_{\hat x}jx^∈Sx^ any index attaining this minimum. Assume αx^<1\alpha_{\hat x}<1αx^<1 and define

u^j=x^j−αx^Pj,Sx^1−αx^,v^j=z^j−αx^Rj,Sx^1−αx^(j∈N),\hat u_j=\frac{\hat x_j-\alpha_{\hat x}P_{j,S_{\hat x}}}{1-\alpha_{\hat x}},\qquad \hat v_j=\frac{\hat z_j-\alpha_{\hat x}R_{j,S_{\hat x}}}{1-\alpha_{\hat x}}\qquad (j\in N),u^j=1−αx^x^j−αx^Pj,Sx^,v^j=1−αx^z^j−αx^Rj,Sx^(j∈N),

and Su^={j∈N:u^j>0}S_{\hat u}=\{j\in N:\hat u_j>0\}Su^={j∈N:u^j>0}. Then (u^,v^)∈H(\hat u,\hat v)\in\mathcal H(u^,v^)∈H and Su^⊆Sx^∖{jx^}S_{\hat u}\subseteq S_{\hat x}\setminus\{j_{\hat x}\}Su^⊆Sx^∖{jx^}.

Since (x^,z^)=αx^(PSx^,RSx^)+(1−αx^)(u^,v^)(\hat x,\hat z)=\alpha_{\hat x}(P_{S_{\hat x}},R_{S_{\hat x}})+(1-\alpha_{\hat x})(\hat u,\hat v)(x^,z^)=αx^(PSx^,RSx^)+(1−αx^)(u^,v^), the lemma is the single step of the Dimension Reduction algorithm: it peels off one (Balance) solution and leaves a point of H\mathcal HH with strictly smaller support.

Formalization Note The paper's jx^=arg⁡min⁡j_{\hat x}=\arg\minjx^=argmin may not be unique; the statement holds for every minimizer. The paper writes ⊂\subset⊂ for (not necessarily strict) inclusion; the conclusion uses ⊆\subseteq⊆, and strictness is already carried by the removal of jx^j_{\hat x}jx^.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
