Proposition 4.5 (Maximization) — maximizes over attainable
ProvedAlgMechDesign.Additive.maximizationLet be a truthful mechanism for task scheduling, a positive type vector and an agent. For a set of tasks write . Then for every set that is attainable for agent against (some positive declaration gives ),
That is, the mechanism allocates to agent a set of tasks maximizing the agent's utility at the offered prices; otherwise the agent would misreport to obtain the better set.
Formalization Note The paper states the maximization over all . With the price that Definition 12 assigns to unattainable sets this is false in general (a truthful mechanism may never give agent the empty set while paying it negative amounts, and then with price would beat ). The statement here takes the maximum over attainable sets, which is what the paper's proof sketch establishes.
