Weak approximation at finitely many finite places

Let KKK be a number field and let SSS be a finite set of pairwise distinct finite places of KKK (nonzero prime ideals www of OK\mathcal O_KOK), with KwK_wKw the www-adic completion. Then the diagonal embedding

K⟶∏w∈SKw,x⟼(x)w∈S,K \longrightarrow \prod_{w \in S} K_w, \qquad x \longmapsto (x)_{w \in S},K⟶w∈S∏Kw,x⟼(x)w∈S,

has dense image (for the product topology).

Equivalently: given xw∈Kwx_w \in K_wxw∈Kw for w∈Sw \in Sw∈S and ε>0\varepsilon > 0ε>0, there is x∈Kx \in Kx∈K with ∣x−xw∣w<ε|x - x_w|_w < \varepsilon∣x−xw∣w<ε for all w∈Sw \in Sw∈S. This is the non-archimedean case of the Artin–Whaples approximation theorem; Mathlib already contains the archimedean analogue NumberField.InfinitePlace.denseRange_algebraMap_pi.

Formalization Note SSS is a Finset of HeightOneSpectrum (𝓞 K); the product is indexed by the elements of SSS.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
