Let f∈S(m,L)f\in S(m,L)f∈S(m,L), that is, 0<m<L0<m<L0<m<L and f:Rd→Rf:\mathbb R^d\to\mathbb Rf:Rd→R is continuously differentiable, strongly convex with parameter mmm, and has an LLL-Lipschitz gradient. Let (y⋆,u⋆)(y_\star,u_\star)(y⋆,u⋆) be a reference for the gradient of fff, i.e. u⋆=∇f(y⋆)u_\star=\nabla f(y_\star)u⋆=∇f(y⋆), and let ϕ:=(∇f,∇f,… )\phi:=(\nabla f,\nabla f,\dots)ϕ:=(∇f,∇f,…). For a sequence y=(yk)k≥0y=(y_k)_{k\ge0}y=(yk)k≥0 in Rd\mathbb R^dRd put uk=∇f(yk)u_k=\nabla f(y_k)uk=∇f(yk), y~k:=yk−y⋆\tilde y_k:=y_k-y_\stary~k:=yk−y⋆ and u~k:=uk−u⋆\tilde u_k:=u_k-u_\staru~k:=uk−u⋆.

Then for any (ρˉ,ρ)(\bar\rho,\rho)(ρˉ,ρ) with 0≤ρˉ≤ρ≤10\le\bar\rho\le\rho\le10≤ρˉ≤ρ≤1 and ρ>0\rho>0ρ>0, every sequence yyy and every k≥0k\ge0k≥0,

(u~0−my~0)T(Ly~0−u~0)+∑t=1kρ−2t(u~t−my~t)T(L(y~t−ρˉ2y~t−1)−(u~t−ρˉ2u~t−1)) ≥ 0.(3.20)(\tilde u_0-m\tilde y_0)^{\mathsf T}(L\tilde y_0-\tilde u_0)+\sum_{t=1}^{k}\rho^{-2t}(\tilde u_t-m\tilde y_t)^{\mathsf T}\big(L(\tilde y_t-\bar\rho^2\tilde y_{t-1})-(\tilde u_t-\bar\rho^2\tilde u_{t-1})\big)\ \ge\ 0. \tag{3.20}(u~0−my~0)T(Ly~0−u~0)+t=1∑kρ−2t(u~t−my~t)T(L(y~t−ρˉ2y~t−1)−(u~t−ρˉ2u~t−1)) ≥ 0.(3.20)

This is the quadratic inequality of the weighted off-by-one ρ\rhoρ-hard IQC. Fed into the main theorem (Theorem 4) of the paper, it is the constraint that certifies linear convergence rates of first-order methods on S(m,L)S(m,L)S(m,L); ρˉ=1\bar\rho=1ρˉ=1 (with ρ=1\rho=1ρ=1) recovers the off-by-one IQC (3.15) and ρˉ=0\bar\rho=0ρˉ=0 a weighted sector constraint.

Formalization Note The reference u⋆=∇f(y⋆)u_\star=\nabla f(y_\star)u⋆=∇f(y⋆) is arbitrary (not required to vanish). The hypothesis ρ>0\rho>0ρ>0 is added: the weight ρ−2t\rho^{-2t}ρ−2t is undefined at ρ=0\rho=0ρ=0, and Lean's convention 0−1=00^{-1}=00−1=0 would change the statement there. The weight is written (ρ2t)−1(\rho^{2t})^{-1}(ρ2t)−1 and the sum over t=1,…,kt=1,\dots,kt=1,…,k is indexed by t+1t+1t+1 for t=0,…,k−1t=0,\dots,k-1t=0,…,k−1. The statement is the lemma's quadratic inequality; the factorization (Ψ,M)(\Psi,M)(Ψ,M) is not formalized. It is stated for every sequence yyy (the page writes y∈ℓ2dy\in\ell_2^dy∈ℓ2d).

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
