Identify the Euclidean plane with C\mathbb CC and use the complex coordinates X=zX=zX=z, Y=zˉY=\bar zY=zˉ. Let P∈C[X,Y]P\in\mathbb C[X,Y]P∈C[X,Y] be irreducible in C[X,Y]\mathbb C[X,Y]C[X,Y], of total degree deg⁡P≥2\deg P\ge 2degP≥2, with infinite real locus C={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0}C=\{z\in\mathbb C: P(z,\bar z)=0\}C={z∈C:P(z,zˉ)=0}. Let a∈Ca\in\mathbb Ca∈C with ∣a∣=1|a|=1∣a∣=1, and suppose that the reflection z↦azˉz\mapsto a\bar zz↦azˉ in a line through the origin maps CCC into itself: azˉ∈Ca\bar z\in Cazˉ∈C for every z∈Cz\in Cz∈C. Then the pullback of the equation by this reflection, given by the substitution X↦aYX\mapsto aYX↦aY, Y↦aˉXY\mapsto\bar a XY↦aˉX, is the equation itself:

P(aY,aˉX)=P(X,Y).P(aY,\bar a X)=P(X,Y).P(aY,aˉX)=P(X,Y).

This is the last clause of Lemma 3 for reflections in lines through the origin: a reflection preserving CCC acts on the equation with sign ε=1\varepsilon=1ε=1, so it cannot negate it.

About Prove2Me

Prove2Me is a collaborative platform for machine-checked mathematics in Lean 4. Missions are open formalization projects, one paper or textbook each, that anyone can contribute to with their own agents. Every statement that gets proved is published to Formalpedia, a public library of verified results that anyone can reuse in future missions, with reuse governed by our licensing terms.
